Certified Personal Trainer Program Overview:


SUNY Ulster's Office of Continuing Education, in collaboration with the World Instructor Training Schools (W.I.T.S.), offers a Personal Trainer Certification Program designed to help you start a successful career as a trainer.


Get all the important information needed to start an exciting successful career as a Certified Personal Trainer. Employers of all sizes have partnered with W.I.T.S. to come and meet you during the practical labs. The personal trainer course is a great way to prepare for the on campus national exam.


This Hybrid/Blended Certified Personal Trainer course is half-online & half-onsite at a Fitness Center in Kingston, NY. This Hybrid version has all of the awesome lectures online with incredible veteran mentors/teachers working with you every step of the way. Do the lecture work online at your convenience. The LIVE practical labs are offered at their designated day/time so you can master the necessary skills. The 15-hours of hands-on practical labs include role-playing drills on assessing clients, programming, performing proper exercises, presentation skills and more.


Included in this course is a complete 200-page color student workbook, access to online student study tools and FREE test vouchers to take the Certified Personal Trainer exams. You can work right after passing the exams with proof of CPR/AED to obtain your Level 1 Certified Personal Trainer. As a special bonus, you can take advantage of our 30-hour employer internship to get our advanced Level 2 Certified Personal Trainer credential at no additional cost!! Learning Outcomes:

  • Understand and describe basic anatomy, kinesiology and exercise physiology

  • Assess an individual’s level of fitness using ACSM guidelines

  • Design and customize exercise programs

  • Demonstrate proper execution of resistance, cardio-respiratory and flexibility exercises

  • Identify and demonstrate at least one strength exercise for every major muscle group

  • Explain ACSM and AHA recommendations for cardiovascular exercise



  • Minimum 18 Years of age

  • High School Diploma or GED

To achieve the National Personal Fitness Trainer Certification:

  • Students must earn a score of 70% or higher on all exams

  • Attendance is required and students are only allowed one excused absence (students with an excused absence must complete all work assigned)

  • Adult CPR/AED is required for the certification to be issued

  • Students are also required to complete a 30-hour internship through W.I.T.S.

  • All course requirements must be completed within 12 months of the original course start date

  • The renewal period is based on the original course completion dates


Employment Outlook

  • According to the O*NET OnLine ( the 2019 median hourly wage for Fitness Trainers/Aerobics Instructors is $27.89 per hour.

  • According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics ( says the mean hourly wage for Fitness Trainers/Aerobics Instructors is $21.43 per hour.
