SUNY Ulster in conjunction with Motorcycle Safety School provides motorcycle/scooter training and licensing courses for all experience levels on the Stone Ridge campus.
The Ultimate Training Package allows a person who has never ridden a motorcycle or scooter to learn all the skills necessary to safely ride at an advanced level. The following three courses are offered in this discounted package: Motorcycling 101, MSF Basic RiderCourse, and MSF Basic RiderCourse 2.
This 2-hour introductory course covers the basics of motorcycling from what type of gear to wear to straight-line riding. Students begin the introductory course by reviewing the appropriate type of clothing and protective equipment to wear while on a motorcycle. Once you are properly attired, it’s time to get some hands-on motorcycle (or scooter) training! The first step in the hands-on part of the course is to learn how to locate and use each of the key controls. Students then move on to basic operation of the motorcycle and finish with straight-line riding. There is no driver’s license or motorcycle permit requirement for this introductory course and up to 6 students can be enrolled in a class.
Students who successfully complete this 18-hour course will receive the DMV Road Test Waiver! This class consists of a 3-hour online eCourse, 5 hours of classroom instruction and 10 hours of practical training on a motorcycle or scooter. The riding portion teaches skills such as straight-line riding, stopping, shifting, turning, swerving, and emergency braking. We provide everything that you will need to take the course -from motorcycles/scooters to helmets! You must have a valid NYS Driver’s License and NYS Motorcycle Permit at the time of waiver redemption (permit test may be taken after course completion). Additionally, be sure to check with your insurance company, as you may be eligible for discounts as a result of taking the course.
Enjoy personalized instruction at your own pace, and learn how to ride safely. You will practice slow-speed maneuvers while under the guidance of a DMV-Certified Instructor. Private lessons are highly recommended for new riders to build confidence while familiarizing themselves with a motorcycle or scooter.
Motorcycle Safety School is holding a “Women’s-Only” MSF Basic Rider Course for new riders to get licensed. In addition, women will receive a 50% discount off the Introductory Motorcycle Experience class. October 3 & 4, 2020.

This alternative to the DMV Road Test is designed for experienced riders who have the ability to perform circles and figure eights on a motorcycle/ scooter. Check with your insurance provider for eligible discounts!
