Macdonald DeWitt Library
The Macdonald DeWitt Library is dedicated to providing access to and promoting high quality resources, instruction and services in support of student learning and the campus community. Our Library sits at the center of the Stone Ridge campus, offering an inviting environment for students to work independently or collaboratively.
We offer books, online magazines/journals, ebooks, streaming films and full-text articles. Resources are accessible to students on and off-campus via My SUNY Ulster. Resource sharing through SUNYConnect and other area libraries also provides students with access to over 18 million volumes and thousands of digital resources.

The online library is open 24/7! The Library page of the portal provides students, faculty, and staff with anytime access to library databases, subject guides and live chat with a librarian. Library hours change during breaks and intersession. The library closes for federal holidays and emergency campus closures.
Information Literacy is one of SUNY Ulster’s Institutional Learning Outcomes and continues to be a major initiative at the college. In 1996, this initiative led to the development of a course, Information Literacy (LIB 111), which received the Association of College and Research Libraries (ACRL) Innovation in Instruction Award. LIB111 gives students the skills they need to be informed and discriminating users of information. The course has been adapted and revised over the years to reflect the changing landscape of information literacy and is a prerequisite or corequisite for students enrolling in ENG 102, ENG 172, or ENG 227.
Other Information Literacy initiatives include our Partner Librarian Program, winner of the Krembs Family Innovation Award in 2018, library instruction sessions, research guides and research consultation appointments.
The local history collection was formally established in 1972 to offer students and faculty the opportunity for historical research, as well as meet the community need for local history. The collection emphasizes material relating to Ulster County but also includes the history of neighboring counties, the Hudson Valley, the Catskill Region and selected materials that cover the general history of the state. The collection also includes select materials relating to the history of the College itself. Also included are books written by faculty and alumni as well as other local authors. Access to the collection is by appointment only.
The SUNY Ulster Herbert H. & Sofia P. Reuner Library Writers Series is a special program begun in 1998, sponsored by The Ulster Community College Foundation, that brings renowned writers to campus every fall. This is a truly unique opportunity for SUNY Ulster students and community members to hear award winning authors read from their work. Each guest writer hosts a question and answer session. This program is open to all – students, alumni, and community members.
Also sponsored by the Ulster Community College Foundation, The Poetry Forum is an annual event which brings well-known and award-winning poets to SUNY Ulster for intimate question and answer sessions, as well as a special reading of their poetry. In 2007, the program was renamed the Ellen Robbins Poetry Forum to honor the memory of Ellen Robbins (1952-2006) who was on the faculty at SUNY Ulster from 1994 until 2006, and Chair of the English department, 2002-2006.
