Program Description

The Certificate in Entrepreneurship is designed to provide students with the skills needed to create, launch and manage a small business or to work within an entrepreneurial venture. For entrepreneurs with established businesses, the certificate will help strengthen their business and management skills. Aspiring entrepreneurs will learn the skills needed to hit the ground running in their quest to start a successful business.

Totaling 25‐26 credits, the first semester consists of courses in accounting, business communications, entrepreneurship, and the legal environment of business; the second semester includes courses in mathematics for business, computerized accounting (QuickBooks), advertising, and a capstone course that will result in a business plan worthy of submission for funding. All the courses listed in the certificate can be transferred to SUNY Ulster's A.A.S. degree in Business and Entrepreneurial Studies or A.A.S. degree in Business: Accounting, either as part of the core curriculum or as electives.


Program Outcomes

Upon the completion of the Entrepreneurship Certificate program, a student will be able to

  • Demonstrate proficiency in accounting procedures relevant to small business ownership and management;
  • Demonstrate effective written, verbal and nonverbal communication techniques in organizations, work teams, across cultures and via technology;
  • Articulate the importance and role of key small business success factors and describe the foundational principles of entrepreneurship and the entrepreneurial mindset;
  • Understand and apply the basic principles of law as they relate to entrepreneurship and small business management;
  • Evaluate, calculate and interpret information related to invoicing, pricing and a variety of business‐related problems;
  • Research and plan a cohesive advertising campaign; articulate the role and planning of print, broadcast, direct, sales promotion, interactive and alternative advertising, as well as public relations;
  • Develop a full business plan, ensuring environmental and societal responsibility in all aspects of the plan.

Employment Potential 
Graduates of this program are equipped with the skills necessary to start and run a small business, or to fill an entry-level position in business and industry.

  • High School diploma or equivalent
  • Computer literacy
  • No Entering Student Assessment needed

For students who do not meet basic reading and math requirements, or who have other learning issues, extra assistance is readily available through SUNY Ulster's Learning Center, The Gary and Janaki Math Center, the Writing Center, the Peer and Friend Tutor Program, and English as a Second Language (ESL) tutors.
