SUNY Ulster Commencement Ceremony FAQs

Commencement 2021

When and where is Commencement?

Commencement will take place on the SUNY Ulster Soccer Field on Saturday, May 21, at 10:00 a.m

Do I need to RSVP to participate in the May 21st Commencement Ceremony?

Yes!  Please RSVP by April 30th, 2022 to ensure your participation in the ceremony.

What COVID-19 health measures are being taken to ensure the safety of graduates and the community?

  • The ceremony will be held outdoors on the soccer field (rain or shine event)
  • The ceremony will be live-streamed so that friends and family can join the celebration remotely
  • Several other local institutions have similar plans in place, and as we are aware, the situation is always changing; these protocols are subject to change. We will be ready to pivot to follow federal, state, and local guidelines in effect at the time of the event.

Are masks required during the commencement ceremony??

As of March 28, 2022, SUNY Ulster has moved to a masks optional policy for all vaccinated employees, staff and visitors. Face masks are still encouraged to be worn in any setting where social distancing of three feet cannot be maintained.

We fully support all members of our community who wish to continue wearing masks for our May 2022 outdoor ceremony to protect themselves, dependents at home or for various reasons, if they prefer to do so.

Masking around others will also be required if you are on day 6-10 after completing day 1-5 of isolation or quarantine, as per County and NYS guidelines.

Do I need to show proof of vaccination in order to take part in the commencement ceremony?

As per SUNY Ulster’s Spring 2022 guidance (and the SUNY COVID-19 Vaccination Policy) students are required to provide proof of full vaccination, or obtain a medical or religious exemption from such a requirement in order to attend classes or access resources on the Stone Ridge or Kingston Center campus of SUNY Ulster.

As such, all students participating in the 2022 Commencement Ceremony are required to comply with the above requirements.

Do my guests need to show proof of vaccination in order to attend the commencement ceremony?

At this time, SUNY’s COVID-19 Vaccination Policy only relates to students in regards to requiring full vaccination in order to access SUNY campuses. As such, visitors/guests are not required to show proof of vaccination to attend the 2022 Commencement Ceremony.

I can’t attend the commencement ceremony.  Will my name be read?  Will my name appear in the program?

Graduates who do not attend the commencement ceremony will have their names appear in the program.  They will not be read live at the commencement ceremony.

How do I know if I am eligible to graduate with Honors or High Honors?

To be graduated with High Honors, students must have a cumulative grade point average of 3.75 or higher. A notation of “W High Honors” will then appear on the student’s transcript.  To be graduated with Honors, students must have a cumulative grade point average between 3.3 and 3.74. A notation of “W Honors” will then appear on the student’s transcript.  Honors and High Honors will be confirmed at the Bookstore when paying/picking up your regalia.

I officially graduated in the Fall of 2021 and I've already received my diploma.  Am I eligible to take part in the Spring 2022 Commencement Ceremony?

Yes!  Students who finished all of their required coursework during the Fall 2021 semester are eligible to take part in the 2022 Spring Commencement Ceremony.  Please be sure to RSVP

How do I order my cap and gown for the commencement ceremony?

Please complete this form to reserve your cap, gown, and any additional regalia for the 2022 Commencement Ceremony. Honors cords and PTK stoles will be available for those who earn these distinctions. Please note there is an additional charge for these items ($13 for cords, $25 for stoles).  Payment is due upon pick up in the Bookstore (cash, card, Apple Pay). Announcements will be made via the Portal and college email when caps & gowns are ready for pick up in the Bookstore. Please reach out to Robin Drao at the Bookstore with any questions: 845-687-5085, draor@sunyulster.edu.

How do I secure guest tickets for commencement?

An electronic ticketing system platform will be used to reserve guest tickets.  Each graduate will be allowed up to four guests for the 2022 Commencement Ceremony.  Additional information regarding guests and tickets, along with a link to reserve tickets will be shared via your my.sunyulster.edu email in the coming days.

Is there a rehearsal?

Rehearsal for the 2022 Commencement exercises will take place on Monday, May 9 at 5:30 p.m. OR Tuesday, May 10th at 10:00 a.m.  Graduates only need to come to one of these rehearsals.

Can I take photos on campus or with President Roberts on the day of commencement?

There will be a professional photographer taking photos of each graduate as their name is called to cross the stage.  Those photos will be available for purchase online a few weeks after the ceremony.

Graduates and their families are more than welcome to take photos around campus prior to or after the commencement ceremony.

Will I still graduate if I decide not to participate in the commencement ceremony?

Graduation is not dependent on participation in the ceremony.  To graduate and have your degree and/or certificate conferred, all academic requirements must be completed.  SUNY Ulster diplomas and certificates will be mailed directly to qualified students once the Registrar’s Office confirms that all course requirements for graduation have been met.

What are the important deadlines I should be aware of??

Please fill out the Spring 2022 Graduation Ceremony RSVP by April 30th.

How will I get my diploma?

SUNY Ulster graduates will be notified via their my.sunyulster.edu email address when their diplomas are ready.  Graduates will have the choice to come to the Stone Ridge Campus to pick up their diploma or have it mailed to the address they have in their SUNY Ulster account.

What time do I need to arrive on campus for the ceremony? Where do I put on my cap and gown?

All day-of logistics will be outlined in a forthcoming communication. Remember to check your college email often!

I have a graduation question, who do I contact?

Please direct all commencement-related questions to graduation@sunyulster.edu.
