Grants
The government pays billions of dollars each year to help students to go to college, and they often do that in the form of a student grant. A student grant usually goes straight to the college and does not have to be paid back.
Federal Pell Grant
A federal grant to undergraduate students who have not earned a bachelor's or professional degree. To determine if you are eligible, apply on the FAFSA website. The maximum Pell Grant for 2024-25 is $7,395 (for full-time students). Part-time students receive a pro-rated amount. The Student Aid Index (SAI) and the student's enrollment status determine the amount of the award. Students must meet all eligibility criteria to be eligible.
Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant (SEOG)
A federal grant for undergraduates with exceptional financial need - Funds are limited and awarded on a first-come-first-served basis. Complete your FAFSA early!
New York State Tuition Assistance Program (TAP) & Part time Tuition Assistance Program (PT-TAP)
A New York State grant for full-time and part-time students who are residents of NYS and meet all eligibility criteria. Students must complete and send the Express TAP Application (ETA) (after the completion of the online FAFSA).
* Awards are dependent on the NYS budget.
Part-time TAP for non-degree programs eligibility
Some of these microcredential courses are eligible to have the New York State Tuition Assistance Program (TAP) for non-degree programs grant cover a portion of the cost of tuition, as long as you are economically eligible as follows and meet other requirements, including:
$125,000 for dependent undergraduate students, independent students who are married and have tax dependents, or independent students who are unmarried and have tax dependents
$60,000 for married independent undergraduate students who have no other dependents
$30,000 for unmarried independent undergraduate students with no dependents
If you believe you earn less than the amount listed in the criteria above, you should apply by completing the FAFSA and TAP applications. Please note you have a lifetime of eight semesters of TAP. These will be prorated for the number of credits you earn, but will use a portion of your lifetime TAP eligibility.
