SUMMER 2012 STUDY ABROAD PROGRAMS

We are offering three Study Abroad programs for Summer, 2012, to Panama, the Amazon and Greece. These programs are available for credit to all students, not just SUNY Ulster students, and to non-students for audit.
Departure dates are yet to be announced, but will be in June and July.

The courses are listed below with individual links to each tour's poster. Complete information including course description and objectives, daily itinerary, and any travel documents you will need will be posted as soon as they have been confirmed.

PANAMA

This 3 credit course provides an introduction to the ecology and biodiver-sity of the Neotropics. Following a short on-campus introduction, the entire course is held on-site in Panama. We will visit a wide array of habitat types from highland cloud forest (some reached by horseback), to lowland rainfor-est and coastal systems including snorkeling in coral reefs and an island off the Pacific coast. In taking the course you would be directly contributing to conservation efforts in Panama by supporting our enlightened tour agency that plows a proportion of profits back into cloud forest conservation. One of the cloud forest sites that we will visit is remote, and on private land, and has been found to harbor new species of frogs and orchids.
SUNY Ulster biologist Dr. David Lemmon is the instructor and is accompanied in Panama by bilingual naturalist guides. Additionally, we may have guest lectures by scientists from area field research stations. This trip will be the 12th offering of BIO 226.

AMAZON

This 3 credit course, held on site in Brazil, provides an introduction to the ecology and biodiversity of the Amazon basin. The entire course is conducted on board an Amazon river boat, with canoe excursions into várzea and igapó forests (flooded for-ests) as well as travel by foot into terra firme (highland forest). Several of these ex-cursions involve nighttime trips, and some include overnight stays in the forest. Small, isolated, caboclo (river-side) communities are also visited. This summer’s trip will be the 12th offering of the course
SUNY Ulster biologist Dr. David Lemmon is the instructor and is accompanied by lo-cal, bilingual, field guides. In addition, joining us again this summer will be the inter-nationally recognized explorer and primatologist Dr. Marc van Roosmalen. Dr. van Roosmalen is the discoverer of several new species of monkey in the Amazon rainfor-est including the second smallest monkey in the world, the black-crowned dwarf marmoset (Callibella humilis), representing a new genus of monkey. Visit Dr. van Roosmalen’s website, http://www.marcvanroosmalen.org/, to learn more about his work and other new animal and plant species that he has discovered in the Amazon.
