Drug Free Workplace
SUNY Ulster is committed to developing and maintaining an institution of higher education free from the abuse of alcohol or the involvement with other drugs (except as prescribed by a physician). The college is dedicated to developing and fostering an atmosphere conducive to the well being and personal development of students, faculty and staff.
The college willingly complies with the Omnibus Anti-Drug Abuse Act of 1988 (Drug Free Workplace Act) because involvement with alcohol and other drugs can lead to health risks, increased chance of injury or death, deterioration of social and family relationships, decreased productivity, and an increase in crime and property damage.
Specifically, the act includes:
- The unlawful manufacture, distribution, dispensation, possession or involvement with alcohol and illegal drugs by faculty, staff or students in the workplace, on college property, or as part of any college activity is prohibited.
- A violation of any of the above prohibitions will result in disciplinary action.
- Federal law requires that an employee notify the employer of any criminal drug statute conviction for a violation occurring in the workplace no later than five days after such conviction.
- An employee convicted as described in the preceding statement will be required, unless employment is terminated, to participate in the Employee Assistance Program or some other appropriate alcohol/drug abuse assistance or rehabilitation program.
The Employee Assistance Program (EAP) provides help to college employees and their families with an alcohol and/or drug problem. All of the health insurance plans include coverage for treatment programs, although coverage differs. Employees should call Human Resources (845-687-5088) for assistance in interpreting this policy.
