These programs are designed for those wishing to start a career in this growing field, professionals looking to expand their skills and credentials, and homeowners, or anyone, interested in learning about current technology and practice in the area of sustainable living.

CONTINUING ED TO OFFER NATIONAL SUSTAINABLE BUILDING ADVISOR CERTIFICATE PROGRAM STARTING IN OCTOBER, 2009

Sustainable building is rapidly becoming the new guiding principle for communities and institutions. Professional advisors are needed to guide employers and clients in strategies and tools for implementing current and future standards.

How to Achieve Green, Sustainable, High Performance Buildings
Short presentation by SBA Lead Instructor, Cliff Cooper, CSBA

This is a specialized training program designed to enable graduates to advise employers or clients on strategies and tools for implementing sustainable buildings. By the end of this training program, participants will be able to:
• Identify and discuss the key practices of sustainable building
• Establish competencies in applying LEED™, and other relevant criteria or established guidelines
• Analyze the costs and benefits of incorporating sustainable building measures
• Take advantage of financial incentives and technical assistance offered by governments, utilities and non- profit organizations
• Work with architects, designers, builders, building operators, and utilities to improve a building’s performance
• Establish a sustainable design goal for project development
• Assist in the education and training of staff in sustainable building

The program will run from October 2009 – June 2010 with classes meeting once a month all day Fridays and Saturdays. Upon completion of the program, you will have had over 100 hours of training, and successful graduates will be eligible to take an exam which certifies them as a National Sustainable Building Advisor. The cost for this program is $2245 which includes the certification exam fee. Payment Plan available.
The program is offered through the National Sustainable Building Advisor Program, which was founded, as a nonprofit corporation in Washington state, for the sole purpose of offering this unique and comprehensive sustainable building curriculum to practicing professionals to give them the tools they need to make our built environment truly sustainable. A nationally-based peer group of experts will provide annual reviews of the material to maintain applicability and timeliness. For more information about the NaSBAP, click here.

Photovoltaics (PV) Installer’s Course - NABCEP Approved

Learn the basics of how to site, design and install photovoltaic (PV) systems! This course includes sizing systems for both grid-connected and off grid PV systems. Learn about the solar resource, the problems associated with shading and what is the best orientation and tilt for PV
arrays. Discuss the basic sizing and design of systems to serve a given electrical load.
Learn safety procedures for installers and study the electrical code for PV systems in detail. Study various mounting systems for PV arrays and how they affect roofs. Includes a hands-on installation of a PV system! Students completing this course may sit for the NABCEP exam.

Your instructor is Dr. Gay E. Canough, a NABCEP certified PV Installer and ISP certified Master Trainer.

This course is approved for The Training of Veterans.

Prerequisite: High school diploma; must be able to do simple arithmetic calculations; must have basic understanding of electricity including familiarity with volts, amps, and AC wiring.

Recommended Textbook: Photovoltaic Systems, $70

Materials Needed: Calculator, volt/amp meter for AC and DC voltage, AC and DC current of at least 20 amps.

This course is for those who have completed the Photovoltaics (PV) Installer’s Course and feel that they need a review before taking the NABCEP Entry Level Certificate of Knowledge of PV Systems exam. The course will cover the ten skill sets listed on the NABCEP learning objectives.

NEW! Advanced Photovoltaics Systems

This course is geared toward PV installers and engineers who have experience with photovoltaic systems. Basics of PV will not be covered. Topics discussed will include the future of solar energy, review of formulas needed to size PV, how to design a PV system with battery backup, PV mounting systems, calculating wind load, weight load on roofs, mounting, safety on roofs, calculating system efficiency, wire sizing, performance monitoring, shading analysis, troubleshooting and
complying with NYSERDA forms and regulations.

The solar industry is filled with smart engineers and scientists. But the industry also needs sales people.

Attend this workshop to learn the basics of selling solar energy systems and the reasons why people buy these systems. Learn how to talk to customers on the phone, how to sort customers, how to ask for the deal and listen to the customer. Learn how to develop a proposal and set goals.

During class you will develop proposals for various sized solar energy systems, put together presentations for prospective customers and look at various marketing techniques.

Bring your laptop, a blank CD and portable printer and paper to class so you can take home finished proposals and presentations. Bring photos of your installations, certificates and endorsements related to your business.

NEW! Conquering the Forms and Regulations of Government Solar Incentives

This workshop will cover NYSERDA and LIPA incentive paperwork, including allowable costs for reimbursement and rebate and how to use PowerClerk® to check application status (NYSERDA).
Plus, the course covers applying for building permits, including filling out permit applications, putting together complete packages for towns, getting stamped drawings, and other requirements by local building inspectors. The class will discuss how to deal with the utilities for interconnection, including: contracts, drawings and system information required by utilities and navigating utility departments.
Finally, it will cover special considerations when doing work in New York City.

Sample paperwork packages will be provided.

Solar Hot Water Systems can help offset your customers’ energy needs and reduce their carbon footprint while taking advantage of lucrative tax credits. These systems are reliable and efficient and the installation of these systems can be a profitable addition to your list of services. This introductory course is intended for the contractor, tradesperson or student who has a basic knowledge of thermal systems and would like to have a more detailed understanding of solar hot water systems, their components and design.

Interested homeowners, businesses, and contractors will have a rare opportunity to learn first hand how to properly site, specify, permit, and install a residential scale wind energy system by participating in this week long workshop.

Presented by John Abularrage of Advanced Radiant Design Inc. – John’s course focuses on practical information for homeowners interested in this economical and comfortable heating system. He will cover the types of systems available and proper installation.

Green Home Building and Renovation with Green Home Tour

This course highlights actual green building and renovation projects in the Hudson River Valley. It features guest speakers and new sections on the green real estate market and how to have carbon neutral 24/7 emergency back up power at one’s home.

The second session will be a tour of 3 green homes submitted to New York House magazine’s “Best in Green Building Competition” where the students will be able to meet the homeowners and ask them questions to see first hand how green homes are built and function. The class gives a complete, practical overview on how to find land, design, build, and/or renovate a home to make it green and sustainable.

Topics include:

• alternative energy systems like geothermal, solar PV and solar thermal, passive solar design, green roofs and walls,
• sustainable and non-toxic materials and insulation,
• panelized building methods such as ICF and SIP,
• energy efficient LED lighting, appliances, and instant hot water heaters,
• air filtration and
• HRV “green” mortgages.”

The course also covers New York State Energy $martTM loans, State & Federal subsidies for energy efficiency with rebates and tax breaks, certified home energy audits and HERS raters.

Your instructor is Paul McGinniss, a co-founder of New York Real Estate Group and a New York State Licensed Real Estate Broker.
