- Organic Gardening for Garden and Containers
This basic organic gardening course will cover where to site and build your garden and set up containers, soil testing, composting, garden layout, planning for succession crops, planting and harvesting techniques to maximize harvests. You will learn great gardening tips and strategies: how to identify and outwit garden pests and encourage beneficial insects and organisms; how to reduce plant diseases; how to build the soil’s nutritional value and increase crop productivity; and, finally how to grow your own nutritionally superior produce and become much healthier.
The class will also cover soil vitality, pH and plant nutrients, composting, mulches and mulching practices, watering and irrigation, crop rotation, pest and beneficial insect identification and strategies for bringing a natural balance to your garden.
Melody Newcombe was Publishing Editor of ‘The Harvest Times’ newsletter about organic and bio-dynamic community farming. She was VP of the Northeast Organic Farmers’ Association and organized the first organic farming conference at Cornell University and the CSA of Kingston. - One Stroke Painting
Learn to paint the Donna Dewberry One Stroke Decorative Style Painting. This course is open to both beginning and advanced students. The advanced class is for students who have completed the basic classes.
The four Basic classes will include a Basic Daisy Class; completing a small wood memory picture frame, a Basic Sunflower Class; completing a wood oval, a Basic Rose Bud and Wisteria Class; completing a wood plate, and a Basic Wildflower Class, completing a wood heart.
The four Advance Classes will include an Advanced Tiger Lily Class, completing a wood plaque; an Advanced Queen Ann’s Lace Class, completing a wood memory box, an Advanced Wild Rose Class, completing an oval surface, and an Advanced Mum and Daisy Class, completing an L shaped composition on a canvass board.
No painting experience is necessary, everyone can paint, and no drawing is required. Let this be the gift you give yourself, a chance to learn this fun, fulfilling, and easy way to paint.

The course will focus on what is currently known about Native American culture history and adaptations in the Hudson Valley region, from its earliest occupation by humans at least 12,000 years ago, to the period of initial European contact. Changing climate and environmental settings resulted in the development of diverse prehistoric lifestyles, which are reflected by the variety of archaeological site types that have been identified in the area. Some of these will be described during the course and their importance to developing an understanding of past life ways and adaptations in the area will be addressed.

The Battle for the Philippines, December 7, 1941 - May 6, 1942, was the real turning point of the war in the Pacific. Follow the journey of captured American soldier from their voyage on the Hellship, Tottori Maru, to Formosa and Korea and the chronicle of their six mile trudge in ice and snow and freezing rain in Mukden Manchuria. Find out how they fought the Japanese through sabotage. Learn about the OSS Team that saved their lives and how the Russians liberated them in August 1945.
Watch and hear several videos and audio presentations of American sacrifice, courage, and survival. Follow the DVDs and oral presentations from Undaunted Valor, which is the voice of the men who survived and became prisoners of war. These are all previously unwritten, untold firsthand accounts.

Students will receive a class lecture pertaining to both Federal and State Guidelines with the topics covered including:
- Driving Safety, Basic Vehicle Control

- Pre-Trip Vehicle Inspection
- Combination Vehicles
Current New York State licensed drivers will gain the knowledge and skills required by the New York State Department of Motor Vehicles Department. Training is provided to facilitate students to ultimately gain licensure in Class “A”, Class “B”, “P” Endorsement, and if needed also allows for the removal of an “O” Restriction.
Please note that fees for tests are not covered by this course and you will be responsible for all testing fees for permit, road tests, and licensure upgrade fees all of which are payable directly to New York State Department of Motor Vehicles.
Vehicles will be provided for your road training and road tests.
You must be a resident of New York State, present a valid New York state driver’s license and have good medical standing.

FORKLIFT OPERATIONS
Course Number - HSI 357
Tuition: $2,375.DESCRIPTION
This professional training program covers forklift truck operation along with aerial lift operation for booms and scissors including maintenance and correct safety practices. The course includes machine familiarization, controls, daily checks, refueling and battery procedures, steering, load weight assessment and handling, stacking racking, awkward loads and vehicle loading and unloading as well as covers in detail the pre-start and operational checks that are required to be done on forklift s and aerial lifts. Upon completion, students will receive 2 standard compliant OSHA 3-year safety cards.

INTRODUCTION TO EARTH MOVING EQUIPMENT
Course Number - HSI 330
Tuition: $2,975This hands-on course covers safety and industry regulatory standards regarding operating earthmoving equipment. Actual time on equipment provides students with opportunities to learn practical operation, controls and instrumentation, steering and maneuvering, equipment inspection and maintenance, operating limitations, material stockpiling, grading and levels and trenching. Vehicles include pay-loaders and excavators used mainly for uploading sand, dirt and mud into trucks, clearing rubble and digging.

ADVANCED EARTH MOVING EQUIPMENT
Course Number - HSI 356
Tuition: $2,975.DESCRIPTION
The Earth Moving Equipment Operator Program provides a comprehensive curriculum including the fundamental and intermediate subject matter in both theoretical (classroom) and practical (field training) aspects of grade reading, excavation and heavy equipment operation, affording a broad look into the processes of planning and executing earth moving activities on various types of construction projects by using machinery to move construction materials, earth, and other heavy materials at construction sites.
The hands-on (practical) training allows the student to acquire advanced seat time, specifically backhoe/ loader operations, presenting proper practices for setting grades off bench marks and describing methods for setting grades using various types of levels. The student is taught how to read and interpret construction plans to determine grading requirements, and a review of grading operations. Safer operation of the equipment is also emphasized.
The complete curriculum consists of 30 hours of classroom training and equipment and field training.
The program includes a Flagger Certification class.

- APPLICATIONS IN WELDING TECHNOLOGIES
Course Number - HSI 358
Tuition: $2,675.DESCRIPTION
This introductory course exposes students new to welding to oxyacetylene, and MIG welding for joining steel together. An emphasis is placed on safety in the work area and developing good manipulative skill. Other skills covered include cutting and grinding as well as an introduction to TIG processes for welding stainless steel and aluminum. This is recommended for students interested in welding without having had any prior welding experience before.
Note mandatory safety guidelines before you attend class:
Personal Protection Equipment (PPE) Requirements: Long sleeve shirt and non-flammable work clothes are required. (Synthetic, polyester, and loose weave fabrics should be avoided.) Steel-toed work boots or steel-toed shoes are required. Students who wear contacts are required to bring their glasses with them to class and inform the instructor that they wear contacts.-20 HRS-

ADVANCED WELDING TECHNOLOGIES
Course Number – HSI 396
Tuition: $2675DESCRIPTION
This advanced course is for students who successfully completed Applications in Welding Technologies and wish to continue their welding education. You will increase your knowledge of welding techniques and be exposed to multiple types of welding fundamentals and materials.
Course topics include: Review / Q&A discussion of introductory course in Applications in Welding Technologies; best safety practices.
You have opportunity for hands on experience in the following: learn three different welding techniques: Stick, MIG and TIG; vertical and overhead welding; multi-pass fillet welds; metal fabrication; use of tools, cutting torch, plasma cutter, layout tools; use of various materials, mild steel angle, round bar, steel plates, pipes; and will choose from selection of blueprints for individual projects.

SUNY Ulster is an approved CASAC training provider by New York State Office of Alcoholism and Substance Abuse Services Academy. This program educates and trains students to work as counselors with alcoholics and other chemically dependent people.

CITIZEN POLICE ACADEMY
A new community-based resource hosted by SUNY Ulster will begin this spring. This new program is designed for community members to foster greater understanding of various aspects of law enforcement through an eight-week course. The course will be offered free to the public.
