NEW! SMALL ENGINE REPAIR

INTRODUCTION to SMALL ENGINE REPAIR

This course is designed for students interested in gaining the knowledge to repair small engine appliances.

A main emphasis will be concentrated on lawnmowers, leaf blowers, chainsaws and trimmers. Students will become familiar with 2 and 4 stroke cycle engines and receive hands-on experience disassembling and reconstructing machines.

Topics covered include diagnosing and troubleshooting common issues found in fuel and exhaust systems, combustion systems, and lubrication systems. 

Upon successful completion of this course, students will have the knowledge to repair any small engine equipment.

OSHA 10 & 30 COURSES

NEW! OSHA 10 & 30 Construction and General Industry
Training Online

Be Prepared! It can be difficult to have to find an OSHA 10 course at the last minute. You could miss out on an employment opportunity if you do not have your OSHA 10 card!

The 10-hour training programs are primarily intended for entry level workers. The 30-hour training programs are intended to provide workers with some safety responsibility and a greater depth and variety of training. All outreach training is intended to cover an overview of the hazards a worker may encounter on a job site. You will set your own elective courses to tailor the training to your exact job needs.

The advertised specifications for every contract for public work of $250,000 or more must contain a provision requiring that every worker employed in the performance of a public work contract shall be certified as having completed an OSHA 10 safety training course. 

Online courses provided by Summit Training have proven to be one of the most efficient and easy to use means of obtaining your DOL/OSHA course completion card.

CERTIFIED SYSTEMS SUPPORT SPECIALIST

The Certified Systems Support Specialist program will enable graduates to seek and gain employment in several private and public sector organizations both in the Hudson Valley and the rest of the U.S. This program is offered by Global Talent Track through the Hudson Valley Educational Consortium, a collaborative effort among SUNY Ulster, Orange, Rockland and Sullivan Community Colleges to create broader access to academic programs and workforce training throughout the four county regions.

COMMERCIAL DRIVING & EQUIPMENT


NEW YORK STATE COMMERCIAL DRIVERS LICENSE COURSE
Course Number – HSI 393
Tuition: $4635

Description

Students will receive a class lecture pertaining to both Federal and State Guidelines with the topics covered including:

  • Driving Safety, Basic Vehicle Control
  • Airbrakes
  • Pre-Trip Vehicle Inspection
  • Combination Vehicles

Current New York State licensed drivers will gain the knowledge and skills required by the New York State Department of Motor Vehicles Department. Training is provided to facilitate students to ultimately gain licensure in Class “A”, Class “B”,“P” Endorsement, and if needed also allows for the removal of an “O” Restriction.

Please note that fees for tests are not covered by this course and you will be responsible for all testing fees for permit, road tests, and licensure upgrade fees all of which are payable directly to New York State Department of Motor Vehicles.

Vehicles will be provided for your road training and road tests. 

You must be a resident of New York State, present a valid New York state driver’s license and have good medical standing.

FORKLIFT OPERATIONS
Course Number - HSI 357
Tuition: $2,775

DESCRIPTION

Gain the experience and knowledge in operating industrial equipment. In this 3 day course, become certified in forklift and aerial lift machines, and learn how to operate skid-steer lifts. OSHA states that you must be certified in forklift trucks and aerial lift in order to operate machines on a construction sites. Through daily lecture and hands-on sessions with a qualified trainer, you will obtain two OSHA certification cards, valid for 3 years, and be well-versed in 5 powered trucks.

Day one will be examining industrial forklift Class 5 and rough terrain forklift Class 7 vehicles. OSHA certified written and hands-on exams are administered to enhance your full understanding of forklift trucks. Learn the operations, skills, and safety guidelines of industrial and rough terrain forklift trucks. You will learn the capacity of the machine and the weight distribution to avoid any preventable scenarios. Apply everything you learned by practicing maneuvering forklifts.

On the second day, you will be given similar OSHA exams for aerial lifts. Learn about new models and features such as alarms (indicating tilt issues or movement in progress). Learn the functionality and safety skills of scissor lifts and boom lifts. Apply what you learned on the actual lifts. The last day of class, you will be examining skid-steer loaders. Learn loading/unloading skills, capabilities and features of these engine powered machines. Spend the afternoon driving and using the equipment.

INTRODUCTION TO EARTH MOVING EQUIPMENT
Course Number - HSI 330
Tuition: $2,975

This hands-on course covers safety and industry regulatory standards regarding operating earthmoving equipment. Actual time on equipment provides students with opportunities to learn practical operation, controls and instrumentation, steering and maneuvering, equipment inspection and maintenance, operating limitations, material stockpiling, grading and levels and trenching.
Vehicles include pay-loaders and excavators used mainly for uploading sand, dirt and mud into trucks, clearing rubble and digging.

ADVANCED EARTH MOVING EQUIPMENT
Course Number - HSI 356
Tuition: $2,975.

DESCRIPTION

The Earth Moving Equipment Operator Program provides a comprehensive curriculum including the fundamental and intermediate subject matter in both theoretical (classroom) and practical (field training) aspects of grade reading, excavation and heavy equipment operation, affording a broad look into the processes of planning and executing earth moving activities on various types of construction projects by using machinery to move construction materials, earth, and other heavy materials at construction sites.

The hands-on (practical) training allows the student to acquire advanced seat time, specifically backhoe/ loader operations, presenting proper practices for setting grades off bench marks and describing methods for setting grades using various types of levels. The student is taught how to read and interpret construction plans to determine grading requirements, and a review of grading operations. Safer operation of the equipment is also emphasized.

The complete curriculum consists of 30 hours of classroom training and equipment and field training.

WELDING


APPLICATIONS IN WELDING TECHNOLOGIES
Course Number - HSI 358
Tuition: $2,675.

DESCRIPTION

This introductory course exposes students new to welding to oxyacetylene, and MIG welding for joining steel together.

An emphasis is placed on safety in the work area and developing good manipulative skill.  Other skills covered include cutting and grinding as well as an introduction to TIG processes for welding stainless steel and aluminum. This is recommended for students interested in welding without having had any prior welding experience before.

Note mandatory safety guidelines before you attend class:
Personal Protection Equipment (PPE) Requirements: Long sleeve shirt and non-flammable work clothes are required. (Synthetic, polyester, and loose weave fabrics should be avoided.) Steel-toed work boots or steel-toed shoes are required. Students who wear contacts are required to bring their glasses with them to class and inform the instructor that they wear contacts.

ADVANCED WELDING TECHNOLOGIES
Course Number – HSI 396
Tuition: $2675

DESCRIPTION

This advanced course is for students who successfully completed Applications in Welding Technologies and wish to continue their welding education. You will increase your knowledge of welding techniques and be exposed to multiple types of welding fundamentals and materials.

Course topics include: Review / Q&A discussion of introductory course in Applications in Welding Technologies; best safety practices.

You have opportunity for hands on experience in the following: learn three different welding techniques: Stick, MIG and TIG; vertical and overhead welding; multi-pass fillet welds; metal fabrication; use of tools, cutting torch, plasma cutter, layout tools; use of various materials, mild steel angle, round bar, steel plates, pipes; and will choose from selection of blueprints for individual projects.

ELECTRONICS


RESIDENTIAL ELECTRONICS and SMART HOME IMPLEMENTATION

In this Residential Electronics course students will learn the basics of digital integration and the components of Smart Home technology. The basis of the course is to learn how to connect and update home systems to create an automated digital environment. Students will learn how to install, troubleshoot, integrate and repair smart home technologies such as digital home entertainment and distribution, home network and network security; and integrated digital control of telecommunications, lighting, energy management and security.
Classes use a hands on approach to become familiar with industry standard tools and equipment. You will understand the components of a structured wiring system, the basic testing and troubleshooting techniques, and use of controls including smart phones to automate a home system. Additional topics focus on increasing comfort of a home owner, or energy saving technology using principals of automated lighting and the different methods of switching, dimming and control.

SECURITY


ELECTRONIC BURGLAR SYSTEMS AND CCTV
Course Number – HSI 446-05
Tuition: $2995

The course provides comprehensive teacher-led instruction in basic security installer topics and skill sets as well as hands-on experience that will provide an understanding of basic burglar and fire alarm systems, components of the systems, output and input devices and how they communicate, maintaining, repairing, replacing, testing and servicing the operation of security systems in accordance with industry standards and codes, and local, city and state regulations.
Additional instruction in surveillance systems and CCTV, motion detectors and wireless devices.

SUNY Ulster is an approved CASAC training provider by New York State Office of Alcoholism and Substance Abuse Services Academy. This program educates and trains students to work as counselors with alcoholics and other chemically dependent people.

CITIZEN POLICE ACADEMY

The Citizen’s Police Academy is a ten-week program designed to give the participants a working knowledge of the law enforcement function within Ulster County. It consists of a series of classes and discussions held once a week, on Wednesday evenings, from 6:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m. Each class size is limited to approximately 40 attendees. There is no cost to anyone who enrolls.

This community-based resource is hosted by SUNY Ulster for community members to foster greater understanding of various aspects of law enforcement.
