Join this course for an afternoon of traditional Ukrainian egg writing using beeswax and dyes as well as baking of spring skylarks and bread decorating. Learn about the meanings of the different symbols and history while making your own batik style pysanka and baked spring birds "zhajvoronky" to take home.

The focus of this workshop will be on a variety of techniques used in blacksmithing that can be mastered by beginners. The course will introduce you to the history and science of forged iron, tools of the shop, fire building and tending, simple hammer welding, tapers, upsets, and the basics of the heat treatment of steel. Discussions will include design and function as well as the tools of the blacksmith shop, including what to look for when buying and how to make tools of your own. This comprehensive program gives you a good working knowledge of hot forging steel as well as the rare opportunity to work in a real blacksmith shop.

This class is a continuation of NCC006 Introduction to Blacksmithing. It will offer you a chance to build on your skills and learn new techniques. By working on several projects you will learn a variety of techniques useful in blacksmithing that can easily be mastered by beginners. Some of the techniques you will use in class are shouldering, hot splitting, punching, simple twists, and more. Projects in this class will include hooks, BBQ fork and forging tongs. PREREQUISITE: Completion of NCC006 Introduction to Blacksmithing or have a comparable skill level to qualify for this class.

NCC 052 / Introduction To Winemaking

In the first session we will introduce the topic of winemaking; discussion will cover winemaking starting materials (grapes, fruit, other sources) and equipment; sources of materials, chemicals, and equipment (for home winemakers); and an overview of the winemaking process and the life cycle of the vine. The second session will go into detail on the process of making wine from obtaining starting materials to the finished product; the focus will be on step-by-step techniques for fermenting, measuring, aging, and enjoying your wine.

In this course you will learn how to appreciate and evaluate good wine, what to look for, and how to taste wine. The first session will cover wine tasting basics and the wines of Europe, and the second session will cover the wines of the US and the Southern Hemisphere. Because this course is taught in a SUNY facility, no wine tasting is permitted. While you will not be tasting wines in class, a list of low cost and readily available wines for personal evaluation will be furnished and attributes of the wines discussed as time permits.
