The focus of this workshop will be on a variety of techniques used in blacksmithing that can easily be mastered by beginners. The course will introduce you to the history and science of forged iron, tools of the shop, fire building and tending, simple hammer welding, tapers, upsets, splitting, punching, simple twists, tool making, and the basic heat treatment of steel. Beginner?s projects include simple hooks, BBQ fork, and cold chisel. Discussions will include design and function as well as the tools of the blacksmith shop, including what to look for when buying and how to make some of your own. This is a comprehensive program that will give you a good working knowledge of hot forging steel as well the rare opportunity to work in a real blacksmith shop. NOTE: This course has a materials fee (paid to the instructor at the first class).
In the first session we will introduce the topic of winemaking; discussion will cover winemaking starting materials (grapes, fruit, other sources) and equipment; sources of materials, chemicals, and equipment (for home winemakers); and an overview of the winemaking process and the life cycle of the vine. The second session will go into detail on the process of making wine from obtaining starting materials to the finished product; the focus will be on step-by-step techniques for fermenting, measuring, aging, and enjoying your wine.
Pictures are worth a thousand words. You will learn to step- by-step how to turn your boxes of photos and memorabilia into keepsake, photo-safe albums. With personal assistance, you will learn techniques for organizing, cropping, layout, mounting, journaling, and much more. Please bring pictures from two events that you want to work with to class. This class has a materials fee (paid to the instructor at the class). The materials fee includes a mini filing system, page, page protector, stickers, and shortcuts to take your pictures to the next level.
Create a precious spring dress for a special girl in your life while learning techniques such as gathering, setting in sleeves, neckline finishing, and zipper application. Some sewing at home will be necessary between classes. This class is appropriate for intermediate sewers who are comfortable with basic cutting and garment construction.
In this class for comfortable beginning sewers, you will create three items to freshen up your kitchen: a table runner, placemat, and napkin (you may complete more placemats and napkins at home). Some of the techniques covered will be mitered corners, working with trims, trimming, turning and pressing, and topstitching.
The place you have seen on Project Runway, Mood, Inc., is just one of the many fabric sources available to the adventurous sewer. Many of these places are tucked on upper floors, while others use their street level windows to pack luscious textiles into every square inch. Join us for this exciting venture into New York?s garment district to look, swatch, and buy fabrics at all price points. We will also visit the trims district where you will find buttons, beads, fringe, chains, and more merchandise then you can imagine. The group will also visit the Museum at the Fashion Institute of Technology, where inspiration resides in every exhibit.
NOTE: Wear comfortable shoes and bring a notebook. Travel will be via Trailways; bus fare is not included in the course fee. In the event of severely inclement weather, trip will be postponed to an alternate date.
Fitting is one of the greatest challenges for home sewers. In this class, you will work with individual postures and measurements to create a well-fitting basic pattern (sloper). After fitting a personal muslin sample, you will transfer your muslin into the perfect oak tag sloper. You will then learn how to apply the differences in your slopers to commercial sewing patterns.
NOTE: This course has a materials fee (paid to the instructor at the first class).Basic sewing experience is necessary. Sewing in class will not be extensive; you may choose to bring your machine, or use hand basting for corrections. A materials list will be mailed to you prior to the start of class or you can find it on SUNY Ulster's website. You will be supplied a pattern and manila papers (you may take your personal slopers into the Flat Patternmaking course - NCC 100).
This class is for sewers whose fashion ideas are not met by commercial sewing patterns. You will learn to manipulate basic pattern parts (slopers) to create new shapes and silhouettes. Muslin samples will be assembled to proof the patterns and make any adjustments necessary. Elements of clothing design will be introduced, and you will then create patterns for an ensemble of your own design. You will use standard industry slopers, or you may bring your own pre-adjusted personal sloper for your designing.
NOTE: Average sewing experience needed. Sewing in class will not be extensive; for the muslin samples and corrections, you may choose to bring your machine or use hand basting. A materials list will be mailed to you prior to the start of class or you can find it on SUNY Ulster's website. Pattern paper may be purchased from the instructor.
Do you like to make people laugh? You can learn the easy steps to becoming a balloon twister! You can be the life of the party, the star and hero to your kids or earn extra income. You will learn the basics: where to get the best balloons and equipment with very little investment, different balloon sizes and shapes and what you can make with them, and how to blow up and tie each kind of balloon. You will make colorful animals, swords, hats and flowers while learning balloon jokes and patter to really have fun with the art of balloon twisting. You too can get a real `bang? out of making `pop?ular balloons. NOTE: This course has a materials fee (paid to the instructor at the first class). Materials provided are balloons and balloon pump which you get to keep along with your own balloon creations.
Learn to paint the Donna Dewberry One Stroke Decorative Style Painting. The classes will include a Basic Daisy Class to make a small wooden memory picture frame, a Basic Sunflower Class to make a wooden tote box, a Basic Rose Bud and Wisteria Class to make a wooden bird house, and a Basic Wildflower Class to make a wooden tray. No painting experience is necessary, everyone can paint and no drawing is required. Let this be the gift you give yourself, a chance to learn this fun, fulfilling, and easy way to paint.
