While you're at SUNY Ulster, get involved in the clubs and organizations. You have a wide selection from which to choose. Clubs and organizations tend to be based on particular interests, and can be oriented towards activities, academics, curriculum, governance, or other special interests. They invite your interest and participation.

The Biology Club meets to discuss biology and to plan programs and field trips related to the biological sciences. They have traveled to Massachusetts for whale watching. The Business Club is a college division of the organization International Association of Administrative Professionals. The Business Club provides students with the opportunity to participate in a professional organization, attend professional meetings and conferences and to hear speakers on various business topics of interest. Meeting times and places are announced at the beginning of each semester.
The Business Club also hosts the new collegiate chapter of the American Marketing Association, which meets every Wednesday, at 1:00 pm, in HAS 208.

This club sponsors activities to benefit and enhance the SUNY Ulster Children's Center, including activities for Halloween, December holidays, and Easter. The Engineering Club engages students in creative projects, such as concrete canoe design (Each year since 1988, club members have designed and constructed a concrete canoe that is entered into a race with other college teams at Nassau Community College. SUNY Ulster's club has won trophies at every competition.) and "punkin chunkin'" competitions. The club participates in TYESA design contests. Monthly meetings include discussion panels, guest speakers and social contact. The day and time of meetings are determined each year according to class schedule opportunities (typically late Monday afternoons, around 5 p.m., in HAR 202).

The Environmental Club meets most Wednesdays from 1 to 2 in Buroughs 101. Our meetings start at 1:00 when we have lunch. The business meeting starts at 1:15. We are involved in a number of activities at this time, and would be interested in branching out to include new members' interests as well. Last year we sold water bottles and coffee mugs to reduce disposable products on campus. We also put together educational displays about environmental issues for the campus Earth Day celebration, and have shown environmental films on campus. We have been helping to maintain a preserve in Saugerties, and have purchased several native trees that will be planted on campus. These trees will not only beautify the campus, but will also provide valuable food and shelter for wildlife. Come join us and bring your own ideas of how the club can improve the natural environment of the SUNY Ulster campus and beyond. The Events Planning Council plans events for all students. Events have included dances, ice cream socials, barbecues, and luncheons, and trips to New York City, Broadway shows, and sporting events. Meetings are held every other Wednesday in Vanderlyn 203A at a time determined at the beginning of each semester.

The LGBTA (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and their Allies) of Ulster County Community College gives support, education and resources to gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender, and heterosexual students and faculty, and the people who support them. This is a group for discussion of feelings, thoughts and goals pertaining to change in our communities. Discussion topics range from coming out, to parents, to relationship problems. The primary objective is to make members feel safe and comfortable in an environment meant for reflection and change. CONFIDENTIALITY IS REQUIRED, to assure members' safety and comfort. Membership in the Alpha Rho Delta chapter of Phi Theta Kappa, a national honors fraternity, is open to students with a grade point average of 3.5 or higher. The national fraternity, which was established over 70 years ago, offers a wide range of workshops, educational opportunities, and scholarships to its members. SUNY Ulster's Alpha Rho Delta chapter was chartered in 1989. Membership is by invitation of the Dean of Academic Affairs. Meetings are held at least one Wednesday a month at 1:10 p.m. in Vanderlyn 254.

RECREATION LEADERSHIP CLUB

This club is open to anyone interested in activities that pertain to the recreation and leisure service careers including, but not limited to, therapeutic recreation, resorts and tourism, and parks and outdoor education. Members plan to attend two professional conferences annually: the Cortland College Recreation Conference and the New York State Recreation and Parks Society Conference. Both are overnight trips. Students may also plan to visit other colleges to explore transfer opportunities. Meetings are on Wednesdays at noon. Interested students who cannot attend, should contact Ms. Zettler for details on club activities.

Have you ever wondered if there is a way to harmonize the different aspects of your life? Take the interdisciplinary approach to learning and living! This is a new and exciting club, founded in 2001. Synthesis is a way of viewing the world from one, central, comprehensive perspective. There are four fundamental aspects to being: Knowledge, Career, Society & Self-Awareness. We discuss the integration between these through all sciences, technologies, and cultures. From diversity can we arrive at Unity? Where is globalization headed? We have lectures, field trips, and other activities.Synthesis Club is where all the possibilities meet on common ground.
During the Fall and Spring semesters, meetings are every Tuesday, 3-5 p.m. in Vanderlyn Student Lounge. The first hour is the official meeting with the next hour for a continuation of informal discussion. Supplementary meetings are held on Wednesdays.
