College Health Services are available to the college community when classes are in session. Any injury sustained on campus should be reported to this office, located in the Senate Gym (SEN 139), 845: 687-5246 or 800: 724-0833, extension 5246.

We provide first aid treatment, medical emergency care, and blood pressure checks. Health and health insurance information, treatment referrals and health counseling are among the services offered. A nurse is on duty Monday through Thursday, from 8:30 am to 4:30 pm, and Friday, from 8:30 am to 12:30 pm, when classes are in session.

Immunization Requirements

Immunization requirements imposed by New York State Public Health Law 2165 in 1990, requires all students born on or after January 1, 1957, to produce, at registration, proof of immunization against measles, mumps and rubella (MMR). This requirement pertains to all full-time and part-time students taking 6 or more credits. Those born before January 1, 1957, are exempt from this requirement. Students who have no record of immunizations should contact College Health Services. The Proof of Immunization Form can be downloaded and printed by clicking here.

In July 2003, Governor Pataki signed New York State Public Health Law 2167 for meningitis requirements requiring institutions, including colleges and universities, to distribute information about meningococcal disease and vaccination to all students. Colleges are required to maintain a reply form from the students stating that they have read the information and either received the vaccine or declined. (This vaccine is not required.) Health Science Student Requirements
(nursing, paramedic, EMT students)

Hospital requirements for health science clinical coursework are stricter than the N.Y. State guidelines for general students.

In addition to the MMR and meningitis requirements, students in nursing, paramedic and EMT courses will need a physical exam by a doctor, nurse practitioner or physicians' assistant. Proof of various other vaccines is also needed.

We also advise vaccination against hepatitis B. The Hepatitis B Vaccination Form must also be completed. This form can be downloaded and printed by clicking here.

Student Insurance
Accidental and Sickness insurance is available to all SUNY Ulster students taking credit courses. The College’s student insurance covers supplemental expenses of the students’ existing insurance coverage. If the student has no existing coverage, the College’s plan will then be considered primary coverage. This coverage is placed to comply with state mandates.

What does the student insurance cover?
Accidental injuries that occur on or off campus are covered up to an aggregate maximum of  $5,000.   Examples of sickness coverage are:  prescriptions, diagnostic x-ray, diagnostic lab, ambulance expense, out-of-hospital physician, hospital physician expense, hospital r&b, emergency medical expense.Brochures with full details are available at Health Services (SEN119), the LAC (VAN241), Admissions Office (VAN101) or the Association Office (VAN154). 

Who is covered?
All students taking credit courses are automatically covered by the SUNY Ulster student insurance.  There is no minimum credit requirement. 

What is the cost?
A minimal ‘insurance fee’ of $5.50 per semester is included on tuition bills.

How do I get treatment for accidental injuries?
You should file an accident report with the Health Services Office and get medical treatment first at either your doctor or emergency service.  Then submit any bills you receive with a claim form to:Claims Administrator, Pioneer Management Systems, PO Box 9040, W. Springfield, MA 01090-9040The insurance carrier will make payment directly to the provider on your behalf.

How do I get treatment for any Sickness?
Go to your medical provider of choice for medical assistance.  You will be required to pay out-of-pocket to the provider and then submit your claim for reimbursement.  Be sure to make a copy of any claim information before submitting it.

How do I submit a claim?

Family Health Plus
This is New York State's health insurance program for adults aged 19 to 64 who qualify. (You do not have to be a parent to be eligible.) It covers people who do not have health insurance and have limited incomes but do not qualify for Medicaid. There is a residency requirement and you must be in certain immigration categories if you are not a citizen. Ulster County has three health plans that provide Family Health Plus insurance.

Planned Parenthood
Planned Parenthood provides information related to healthy sexuality. They also provide services related to reproductive health, including emergency contraception and free condoms. Clinics are located throughout Ulster, Dutchess and Sullivan Counties and you may be eligible for free services.
