One of America's most prolific and versatile contemporary writers, Joyce Carol Oates, will visit Ulster County Community College's Stone Ridge campus on Tuesday, October 26, as part of the College's Library Writers Series. There will be two sessions in the Vanderlyn Hall Student Lounge, both free and open to the public. Ms. Oates will make an informal presentation at 1:30 p.m. followed by a question and answer session. At 7:00 p.m. Ms. Oates will present selections from her novels, short stories and poetry. A book signing and reception will follow.

Joyce Carol Oates, who appeals to a wide audience, has produced some of the most controversial, and lasting, fiction of our time. Oates' most recent novels include The Falls (2004), Freaky Green Eyes (2003) and Big Mouth & Ugly Girl, her first novel for young adults (2002). Black Water (1992), a narrative based on the Chappaquiddick scandal, garnered a Pulitzer Prize nomination, and her national bestseller Blonde (2000), an epic about American icon Marilyn Monroe, became a National Book Award finalist. We Were the Mulvaneys (1996) earned the number one spot on the New York Times bestseller list.

Oates's versatility in a variety of genres and styles has won much praise. The novelist and poet Erica Jong states, "Miss Oates is one of our most audaciously talented writers. Her gift is so large, her fluency in different genres -- poems, short stories, novels, essays -- so great, that at times she seems to challenge the ability of readers to keep up with her." Greg Johnson writes, "[Oates's] particular genius is her ability to convey psychological states with unerring fidelity, and to relate the intense private experiences of her characters to the larger realities of American life."

Ms. Oates has written about 100 books over the past 40 years, including novels, short story collections, volumes of poetry, literary criticism and essays. Her writing has earned her such prestigious awards as the National Book Award for her novel them (1969), a Guggenheim Fellowship, the Rosenthal Award from the American Academy Institute of Arts and Letters (she has been a member since 1978) and the O. Henry Prize for Continued Achievement in the Short Story, as well as two nominations for the Nobel Prize. Ms. Oates is the Roger S. Berlind Distinguished Professor of the Humanities at Princeton University.
