SUNY Ulster - Artist-in-Residence Program

Artist-in-Residence Program

Spring 2009 Larry Berk Artist-in-Residence: Lola Cohen

We are pleased to announce that the Larry Berk Artists-in-Residence for Spring 2009 will be Lola Cohen, who has taught acting for 23 years at the world renowned Lee Strasberg Theater and Film Institute, NYU's Tisch School of the Arts Acting Program and in her private classes.  Cohen will be teaching an eight session class, The Work of Lee Strasberg's Method Acting, and host a series of three evening events including a video presentation and discussion on Lee Strasberg on Mar. 4, Scene Night on Apr. 29, and a special presentation of Lewis John Carlino's one-act play, Snowangel on May 8. The Artist-in-Residence Program at SUNY Ulster began in the Spring of 1999. The goal of the program is to celebrate the rich arts culture in this community and to give SUNY Ulster students and the general public the opportunity to enjoy and appreciate all forms of arts and to make the arts a part of their own lives. In 2007, the program was renamed the Larry Berk Artist-in-Residence Program to honor the memory of Larry Berk, for his extraordinary work in creating several series of cultural, intellectual and artistic programs that are unique among New York State’s community colleges. These have included the Artist in Residence Series, Library Writers Series, the annual Poetry Forum and a Visiting Artists Series. In 2008, SUNY Ulster introduced the Words and Music Series, sponsored by Ulster Community College Foundation, Inc. and dedicated to Larry Berk for all his work in bringing these programs to campus.

This unique program brings an established local artist to campus for an entire semester. The chosen artist presents a series of events, open to the public, during the semester. Many of the special evening events, hosted by the Artist-in-Residence, will feature additional guest artists of world renown, invited to SUNY Ulster by the Artist-in-Residence. The Artist-in-Residence Program offers students and community members a chance to work with, and learn from, active artists.
