Fall 2002 ~ KARL BERGER
Internationally known musician and educator Dr. Karl Berger, was selected to be the fall 2002 artist-in-residence at Ulster County Community College.
As part of Artist-in-residence Program, Dr. Berger taught a three-credit course, Expand Your Musical Horizons: Listening, Playing, Improvising, and hosted two public performances. The original press releases follow.
SUNY ULSTER ARTIST-IN-RESIDENCE KARL BERGER WILL TEACH "EXPAND YOUR MUSICAL HORIZONS" ... Internationally known musician and educator Dr. Karl Berger, the fall 2002 artist-in-residence at Ulster County Community College, will teach a three-credit course, Expand Your Musical Horizons: Listening, Playing, Improvising. The course will be offered on the college's Stone Ridge campus on Tuesdays from 7 to 10 p.m. for 15 weeks beginning August 27.
Students will learn to experience music and sound in a new way. The class will allow for participation by student musicians and listeners without prior musical education, but will also be of interest to advanced musicians. Participants will explore music appreciation and communication by working with elements common to all kinds of music from around the world, and by learning to focus on the subtle details that make all good music work. The class schedule will include two concerts featuring composer/performer Karl Berger and Friends. Guest Artists will include Ingrid Sertso, Steve Gorn, John Lindberg and Tani Tabbal.
Karl Berger is as one of the world's foremost players and teachers of creative music. A winner of numerous Downbeat Awards, he has worked with contemporary jazz groups, orchestras, big bands and classical ensembles, composed arrangements for such artists as Jeff Buckley and Natalie Merchant, and has been commissioned by the National Endowment for the Arts and the New York State Council on the Arts. He founded the Creative Music Studio in Woodstock, a legendary center for innovative musical studies and productions. Information about Berger can be found at www.karlberger.com. KARL BERGER & FRIENDS PERFORM WORLD JAZZ AND IMPROVISATION ... Internationally known musician and educator Karl Berger, the Fall 2002 Artist-in-Residence at Ulster County Community College, presented a free concert in the Vanderlyn Hall Student Lounge on the college's Stone Ridge campus on Tuesday, September 10, at 8:00 p.m.
Joining Berger was guest soloists Steve Gorn, world renowned as one of the few Westerners to master the East Indian bansuri flute, plus Ingrid Sertso, voice, and Tom Schmidt, percussion. The quartet performed compositions by Karl Berger that set the stage for collective and individual improvisations in the rhythmic context of his special brand of world jazz.
