Ulster Community College Foundation, Inc.

SUNY Ulster's students have been served by the Ulster Community College Foundation, Inc. since 1976. The Foundation provides special enrichment opportunities, including programs, speakers, equipment to enhance the learning environment, scholarships and technological resources. In addition to the support of educational and cultural programs, the Foundation awards over $100,000 in scholarships annually. These awards enable students to begin or continue their educations at SUNY Ulster, or to further their studies by transferring to four-year schools. Through this Scholarship Program listing, the Foundation commemorates our donors who provide support to SUNY Ulster students each in their own special way.

GENERAL ACADEMIC

Barbara A. Adams Scholarship

President Donald C. Katt, with support from faculty and staff, initiated the Barbara A. Adams Scholarship to recognize the contributions of Ulster County Community College's retired President. Ms. Adams is acknowledged for her dedication and innovative contributions to the College during her tenure. The fund will provide an annual award to a student who is accepted as an honors student at SUNY Ulster. Ms. Adams was committed to promoting student pride and achievement. The award will be given to a student who exemplifies the standard of excellence that President Adams hoped all students would strive to attain.

Sherman Adin and Carol E. Adin Scholarship Fund

The Ulster County Community College is a grateful recipient of a charitable bequest through the Estate of Carol E. Adin who passed away on July 13, 2002. In accordance with the donor's wishes, the Sherman Adin and Carol E. Adin Fund has been established to support SUNY Ulster's scholarship program. The scholarship will become available to Ulster County residents who attend Ulster County Community College or to graduates of SUNY Ulster who are transferring to an accredited college located in New York State.

American Association of University Women Scholarship

The American Association of University Women Scholarship was established to financially assist students in completing their education at four-year universities. The successful candidate is chosen by a committee of AAUW members.

Anonymous Scholarship

The generosity of two anonymous Saugerties residents provides annual funding for full tuition to a Kingston High School graduate who is entering Ulster County Community College. The donors actively participate in the selection of the recipients and are interested in students who have demonstrated effort in attaining academic achievement.

The Braby/Blackwell Family Memorial Scholarship continues to ease the financial burden of attending college for many deserving students. Recipients reside in the town or village of Saugerties.

The members of the Colonial Cooperative Insurance have established this annual scholarship in memory of Joan Albin. The recipient will be an entering, returning or transferring student.

Lucille Clark Cyr Memorial Scholarship

Lucille Clark Cyr, sister of Barbara Schmidt, Assistant to the SUNY Ulster President, committed her life to befriend, assist, and provide support to others. Through the generosity of her family the scholarship pays tribute to the life of Lucille who shared so much with others. Ms. Schmidt chooses from among those recommended by the committee as representing the traits Ms. Cyr admired.

Daughters of the American Revolution; Wiltwyck Chapter, NS; Dame Margarette Hendrickse Van Keuren Memorial & Governor George Clinton Memorial Scholarship

The Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) Scholarships are $500 U.S. Treasury savings bonds given out annually to two returning or graduating students, one male and one female, who are pursuing degrees which will benefit the community. Recipients have demonstrated commitment to community service.

The Frank G. Elliott Scholarship was established through a bequest of Grace E. Elliott in memory of her brother. Candidates for this award may be either entering or returning students and should be residents of New Paltz.

Michael Finnegan Memorial Scholarship

The Howard C. St. John family has generously created a scholarship in memory of their friend, Michael Finnegan, who was tragically lost in the September 11, 2001 Twin Towers attack. Michael Finnegan, as a Kingston high school student, established himself as the area's premier amateur golfer. Michael was also known for his outstanding leadership qualities. He is remembered by his family as a loving husband, father of three young children, son and brother. An annual scholarship will be awarded to an entering or returning student who was also a Kingston High School graduate.

The Garraghan Family Scholarship

Originally the Raymond Garraghan Memorial Scholarship, this fund was established in memory of the former Kingston Mayor and Chairman of the Ulster County Community College Board of Trustees. This fund has since been enhanced to honor and remember other members of the Garraghan Family. This scholarship is intended to assist hardworking students in attaining their educational goals.

Dominic J. Giamei, Jr. Memorial Scholarship

The Dominic J. Giamei, Jr. Memorial Scholarship honors the memory of a former student of Ulster County Community College, whose life ended in a tragic accident. Dominic majored in Criminal Justice and was a member of the football team. He was also an active member of the Kripplebush Lyonsville Fire Department and the Marbletown First Aid Rescue Squad. Recipients of this scholarship should be graduates of Rondout Valley High School who plan to attend Ulster County Community College. Preference is given to students involved in community service and who participate in team sports.

Charles Haas Memorial Scholarship

Charlie, at age 17, a member of the High Falls Fire Department and an enlistee in the U.S. Air Force, was killed in the line of duty in 1981. The scholarships are available, one time only, to graduating seniors of Ulster County High Schools accepted by two or four year colleges. Viola C. Jansen Scholarship

The Viola C. Jansen Scholarship was established through a bequest. The scholarship is awarded to entering, returning or graduating students at Ulster County Community College. It is preferred that the scholarship be given to graduates from a Shawangunk area high school (Wallkill or Pine Bush).

Dr. Richard Katims Scholarship

Dr. Richard Katims
Dr. Richard Katims was a valued member of the college community, a friend to everyone at SUNY Ulster, and an inspirational teacher and mentor to his students. Dr. Katims generously determined that all proceeds from the sale of his book, Soundings: Poems and Essays, will be contributed to the College Foundation, in perpetuity, in order to create an endowed scholarship in his name. If you are interested in purchasing a book call the Foundation office at (845) 687-5283.
The Foundation will maintain a plaque to be displayed on campus upon which a panel may be added each year with the name of the new recipient and the year given. The recipient will be presented with a certificate at the Scholarship Ceremony. Recipients for this award should be transferring to a four-year institution and a letter of acceptance is required. Dr. Katims expressed that the recipient shall be "committed to studying about and working for human rights, world peace, protection of the environment, or the diminution and elimination of global hunger and poverty." First preference will be given to students who are the first member of their families to graduate from college. Second preference will be given to those students with the highest grade point average.

Frederick and Ellen Katt Memorial Scholarship

Through the generosity and kindness of their family, and members of the faculty and staff, the parents of Ulster County Community College's President, Donald C. Katt, will be forever remembered. The Frederick and Ellen Katt Memorial Scholarship will be awarded to a student who has demonstrated high academic achievement while attending SUNY Ulster.

Kentucky Fried Chicken Scholarship

This scholarship is made possible through the generosity of Darlene Pfeiffer, chief executive officer and the holder of two Kentucky Fried Chicken Franchises located in Kingston and Poughkeepsie. In addition to her work on behalf of the Association of KFC Franchises, of which she is past president, Ms. Pfeiffer has devoted her time and energy to sustaining and expanding the philanthropic legacy of Colonel Harland Sanders, founder of the KFC company. She currently serves on the board of directors of the Colonel’s Kids, which provides college scholarships. It is in the spirit of these awards that she has established five scholarships for students entering SUNY Ulster. Recipients must demonstrate self motivation, an entrepreneurial spirit, and be single parents. They must also demonstrate financial need. Preference may be given to students majoring in business, nursing or other health – related fields. Recipients who meet academic criteria may be eligible to receive the scholarship for a second year.

Gordon L. Kidd, Jr. Memorial Scholarship

The Gordon L. Kidd, Jr. Memorial Scholarship was established by colleagues, friends, family and former students to honor a founding faculty member. Many were inspired by Gordon to achieve beyond what they had thought possible. The impact Gordon made on SUNY Ulster and the students whom he reached on many different levels, will continue to be remembered with every student who is assisted by this scholarship. Candidates for this award should be returning to SUNY Ulster to complete a program in any area, with either full- or part-time status. The recipient must demonstrate financial need and funds from this award are to be applied to tuition and educational expenses. It is preferred that the award be given to a student who has overcome challenges to achieve his/her educational goals.

Kingston Masonic Lodge #10, F. & A.M. Scholarship

The Masonic Lodge of Kingston sponsors annual scholarships through the Ulster Community College Foundation, Inc. This scholarship is awarded to entering or returning students who are themselves Masons, or who are wives, children, grandchildren, nieces or nephews of Masonic Lodge members. Kingston Rotary Club: Arthur B. Sheldon Scholarship

The Kingston Rotary Club sponsors an annual scholarship in honor of Arthur B. Sheldon, through the Ulster Community College Foundation, Inc. This award is intended for full-time students who plan to transfer to a four-year college or university. Further criteria include residency in Ulster County, community involvement, a cumulative average of 3.0, and the need or initiative to seek employment to contribute to the costs of education. Preference will be given to a student who will be transferring to SUNY New Paltz.

Kingston Professional Firefighters' Association: Harry E. Hornbeck Memorial Scholarships

The Kingston Professional Firefighters' Association sponsors an annual scholarship in memory of Harry E. Hornbeck, a Professional Firefighter and active union member who was committed to improving the livelihood of his brother professionals. Mr. Hornbeck passed away in July of 1990, at the age of 44. The Kingston Professional Firefighters' Association: Harry E. Hornbeck Memorial Scholarship honors the contributions Mr. Hornbeck made to his community. Graduating seniors from any Ulster County High School who are planning to enter SUNY Ulster to continue their studies are eligible for this award.

The Kiwanis Club of Kingston sponsors an annual scholarship through the Ulster Community College Foundation, Inc., to be awarded to a returning student at SUNY Ulster, who is, preferably, a resident of Kingston.

Jay and Lucia de L. Klock Foundation of Kingston Scholarship

The Klock Foundation of Kingston has established the Jay and Lucia de L. Klock Foundation Scholarship Fund to provide awards annually to SUNY Ulster students. Key Private Bank, as Trustees of the Klock Kingston Fund, continue to support education and other local, worthwhile causes, as intended through this bequest from the Klock estate.

George M. and Shirley J. Krembs Innovation Scholarship

Candidates for the Krembs Innovation Scholarship should have scholastic ability, leadership qualities, and concerns for the human needs of tomorrow's world. Furthermore, candidates should be able to demonstrate innovative thinking. Candidates should have completed some aspect of work or service that has brought significant change to a course or program at SUNY Ulster or to student life on campus; or completed work within the community that has significantly improved a pre-existing condition. Margaret C. Lewis Scholarship

Margaret C. Lewis
Margaret C. Lewis studied dance with F.M. Crosse in London, where she completed a six-year curriculum with highest awards. She taught dance in Newfoundland and New York, and was cited as an authority on dance in two books, Dancing and Dancers of Today, by Charles and Caroline Caffin and The Dance, by Troy and Margaret West Kinney. She was on the board of directors of Wassaic State Hospital, a founding member of the Kingston YWCA, and a member of the Kingston Garden Club. Mrs. Lewis was also president of the Children's Home and a member of the Ulster County Historical Society. During World War II, Mrs. Lewis headed the War Bond drive in Kingston. Through a bequest, this scholarship has been established in her name. There is no specific requirement stipulated for this award.

As a result of the generosity of Patricia Maue, a former staff member of SUNY Ulster's Small Business Development Center, this scholarship will be established upon the distribution of annuities to benefit an entering or returning full-time female student with a cumulative average of at least 3.5.

The McCann/Pezzino Memorial Scholarship honors the parents of Carl & Madeline Pezzino. Madeline is a member of SUNY Ulster's campus community and has ably served SUNY Ulster students in her capacity as Admissions Counselor for many years. Rondout Valley High School graduates are eligible for this award. Carl and Madeline will select the recipient.

Mid-Hudson Valley Federal Credit Union Scholarship

Chartered in 1963, the Mid-Hudson Valley Federal Credit Union serves anyone who lives, works, worships or volunteers in Ulster, Orange or Dutchess County, as well as businesses and other legal entities. MHV has demonstrated its commitment to the community through ongoing support of such causes as the American Cancer Society, Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, American Heart Association and United Way. In support of education, MHVCU has established two scholarships with the Ulster Community College Foundation, Inc. One scholarship will be awarded to an entering, returning or transferring student who is a member of Mid-Hudson Valley Federal Credit Union. In addition to membership requirement, a second recipient will be chosen who demonstrates a commitment to community service.

Carl J. Mihm, Jr. Memorial Scholarship

Carl J. Mihm, Jr. was an Ulster County Community College employee. Mr. Mihm was diagnosed with an inoperable form of cancer, and colleagues remember his bravery as he continued to work throughout his chemotherapy treatment. One of his many accomplishments at SUNY Ulster was the organization and planning of the College's 25th Anniversary Dinner Dance held at Mohonk Mountain House. The Carl J. Mihm, Jr. Memorial Scholarship, supported by Carl's family and friends, has been established to assist returning or graduating and transferring SUNY Ulster students, preferably enrolled in the PACE Program.

John H. Moehle Memorial Scholarship

The John H. Moehle Memorial Scholarship is in honor of a former supervising principal of the Onteora School District for the years 1948-1951 and 1953-1959. A major accomplishment of Mr. Moehle's was the organization of the Civil Defense Program for all New York State Schools while working for the State Department of Education in Albany between the years 1951 and 1953. Mr. Moehle was a valuable asset to the town of Phoenicia and served as board member and president of the Phoenicia Library and other groups. The John H. Moehle Memorial will be awarded to students who have graduated from or are graduating from Onteora High School.

Gerald "Jay" Neuhoff Memorial Scholarship

The Gerald "Jay" Neuhoff Memorial Scholarship is intended for physically challenged Ulster County Community College students, with preference given to those with hemophilia. This scholarship is supported by SUNY Ulster faculty and staff to honor and remember the beloved son of retired SUNY Ulster staff member, Joan Neuhoff.

The Patricia M. O'Brien Memorial Scholarship will be awarded to "a special student who needs a little extra help to finish SUNY Ulster." This scholarship was established by Ms. O'Brien's family.

Louis and Sophie Offerman Palkowics Memorial Scholarship

Mrs. Herbert Reuner has initiated this scholarship in loving memory of her parents Louis and Sophie Offermann Palkowics who, while visiting relatives in Rifton, fell in love with the area and moved there from Brooklyn in 1922. Although Mr. Palkowics had been employed as a butcher in Brooklyn, he soon began working for Central Hudson helping to build the Dashville Dam. Within a very short time, he was promoted to become the operator of the facility. Mrs. Reuner remembers both of her parents as dedicated, loving, and supportive individuals who were great achievers but always in a quiet and unassuming way. She recalls that her father was so well-liked that when he retired after many years at Central Hudson, his retirement dinner was the largest in the history of the company.

The Organization of Professional and Administrative Personnel (OPAP) sponsors an annual scholarship for returning Ulster County Community College students. OPAP represents College administrative staff and is committed to the quality of the College and to assisting its students.

P.E.O. Sisterhood Scholarship

The P.E.O. Sisterhood sponsors an annual scholarship through the Ulster Community College Foundation, Inc. This off-campus sorority has been furthering women's education since 1869. Graduating and transferring SUNY Ulster students who plan to continue their education and demonstrate financial need are eligible for the P.E.O. Sisterhood Scholarships. Non-traditional, female students in need receive first priority.

Ruth Pacini Satterfield, Veronica Pacini & Patricia Pacini Honorary Scholarship

This scholarship is intended for Ulster County Community College students who demonstrate financial need and have a cumulative average of at least 2.5. This award recognizes that perseverance and effort required to attain schooling (such as necessity to work, care of others, being a single parent, disability) may take precedence over scholastic ability or grade attainment as long as the recipient works to his/her ability under the circumstances and maintains required academic standards.

Returning Ulster County Community College students who are members of Phi Theta Kappa are eligible for the Phi Theta Kappa Scholarship. This award is intended for the purchase of books and supplies.

Vern and Paula Piantanida
Vern and Paula Piantanida, long-term advocates of the Foundation's scholarship program, are providing funding for six awards. The Marianne Collins Honorary Scholarship, Anita DeFina Honorary Scholarship, James Hadley Honorary Scholarship, Hank Miller Honorary Scholarship, Fred McCoy Memorial Scholarship and Members of the 2005 Scholarship Selection Committee Honorary Scholarship. Recipients must be returning or transferring students who are attending full-time and have a minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.0.

Louis and Mildred Resnick
Mildred and Louis Resnick, through their longstanding generosity and commitment to education and to the community, have made available a scholarship fund through which many Ulster County Community College students receive financial assistance. The Mildred and Louis Resnick Scholarship, in Memory of Joseph Y. Resnick, established in the early 1980's, is available to returning full-time SUNY Ulster students. Preference is given to students who demonstrate financial need and public or community involvement, as well as academic ability.

Professor Milton L. Reynolds Memorial Scholarship

Milton L. Reynolds was a professor and chairman of the Computer Information Systems/Computer Science Department at Ulster County Community College. Mr. Reynolds had been looking forward to spending his future years at the retirement home he and his wife had built in Little Falls, NY. He passed away, just days before his planned retirement. It is preferred that the Professor Milton L. Reynolds Memorial Scholarship be awarded to a prison education or minority student.

The members of the Rondout Valley Paraprofessional Unit created this scholarship in 1987 to benefit a graduate of Rondout Valley High School. The membership selects the recipients.

The Professor Joseph K. Schwarz Memorial Scholarship honors the memory of a former educator at Ulster County Community College. Professor Schwarz was considered a dedicated teacher and a unique individual by his friends and colleagues, and a great inspiration to his students. There is no specific requirement stipulated for this award.

St. James Methodist Church: Evelyn Wright Scholarship

In 1999, the St. James United Methodist Church began sponsorship of a special scholarship to be awarded to one student each year for five years. This scholarship will cover two years of full tuition for each student. Recipients will be chosen by the St. James United Methodist Church. Three of the five scholarships will be awarded to St. Clara's "King's Kids." All recipients shall demonstrate financial need and be considered at high risk. Recipients must make satisfactory progress during their first year in order to continue receiving the scholarship for the second year.

SUNY Ulster College Scholars Program

Ulster County residents who graduate in the top ten percent of their high school graduating class with Regents diplomas are eligible to participate in the College Scholars Program and receive a full-tuition scholarship to attend SUNY Ulster. Candidates should meet further criteria by being enrolled full-time within two semesters following high school graduation. Candidates shall not have attended any other college.
To apply for the College Scholars Program, an applicant must apply for federal and state financial aid for each year they are in attendance (applications are available in the SUNY Ulster Admissions and Financial Aid offices), and complete the College Scholars application .
Support for the College Scholars Program comes from Ulster County Community College, and the Ulster Community College Foundation, Inc. which raises and administers funds to reward students' academic achievements. The Ulster County Community College Board of Trustees proudly sponsors a scholarship annually through the Ulster Community College Foundation, Inc. This year, the award is made in memory of SUNY Ulster's longstanding and dear friend, Wendell D. Harp, a member of both the College and Foundation Boards. Senator Arthur H. Wicks Foundation Scholarship

A political legend in Ulster County, which he represented in the New York State Senate from 1927 to 1956, Senator Wicks supported the educational pursuits of scores of students throughout his life. Upon his retirement from the Senate he established the Arthur H. Wicks Foundation to formally provide scholarships in perpetuity, and later committed the Wicks Foundation assets to the Ulster Community College Foundation, Inc. scholarship program.

Al DiBernardo Scholar-Athlete Award

The Al DiBernardo Scholar-Athlete Award is given annually in honor of Professor Albert DiBernardo, SUNY Ulster's first physical education instructor, first coach, and first athletic director. The award is given to one male and one female student who has demonstrated an above average level of academic achievement, while competing in one or more intercollegiate sports. The academic level of classes, the number of completed credits, and final grades for spring semester are taken into consideration. Recipients are chosen following the semester's end by the Physical Education and Recreation Leadership program, in conjunction with recommendations from the Athletic Director. The students who are awarded this honor receive a scholarship, and have their names added to a plaque in the Senate Gymnasium.

Coleen Hughes Memorial Scholarship

The Coleen Hughes Memorial Scholarship is in memory of a popular, enthusiastic and friendly Ulster County Community College Alumna. Coleen Hughes graduated as a Recreation Leadership major in 1981 and was employed with the Kingston Department of Parks and Recreation. Coleen gained great respect in the community in this position. In 1985, she died in an automobile accident. Coleen's friends, family, and associates established a permanent award to carry on her spirit. Candidates should be either returning or transferring to a four-year college or university. They should major in Recreation Leadership or in Individual Studies with a concentration in Recreation. While grades are taken into consideration, all students regardless of cumulative average are considered. The scholarship committee will choose a recipient who best demonstrates Coleen's love for life and service to others.

The James P. Mertes Memorial Scholarship, established through the Ulster Community College Foundation, Inc., has been supported by friends and family of Mr. Mertes who hold an annual Golf Tournament in his name to raise funds for these awards. Through the generosity of his friends and family, this memorial scholarship celebrates the life achievements of SUNY Ulster's own legendary athletics' coach, Michael J. Perry, Jr. Within a career of great accomplishment, including director of athletics, Michael is best known at SUNY Ulster for leading the College basketball team to national competitions, placing SUNY Ulster's athletic program on the map during its formative years. The Michael J. Perry, Jr. Scholarship will be awarded to a full-time, returning or transferring student who is pursuing a career in sports management, with a preference given to basketball. The recipient must have a minimum GPA of 3.0 and demonstrate financial need.

Frank Sena Memorial Scholarship

Robert Sena, long-term Emeritus Professor of Biology and now a member of the Adjunct Faculty at SUNY Ulster, has established an annual scholarship in memory of his father, Frank Sena. Professor Sena's intent is to assist a student pursuing a research or teaching career in the fields of pharmacology, biochemistry, genetics, cell biology or pharmacy. He hopes to reflect his father's values and dedication to his own work for over twenty years at Pfizer Inc., and to recognize the benefits of products developed for both human and animal use. A grade point average of 3.3 is preferred and the recipient must be a returning or transferring full-time student. Financial need is a factor in determining this award.

Bedell Family Scholarship Fund

The Bedell Family Scholarship Fund was established by Faculty Emeritus Alfred Bedell and his brother, Harold, a retired Dutchess County Sheriff's Department Lieutenant, in memory of Alfred J. and Frances S. Bedell who valued education, personal integrity, and civic responsibility. The purpose of this fund is to provide financial assistance to full- and part-time students enrolled in the Business and/or the Criminal Justice programs.

Kentucky Fried Chicken Scholarship

This scholarship is made possible through the generosity of Darlene Pfeiffer, chief executive officer and the holder of two Kentucky Fried Chicken Franchises located in Kingston and Poughkeepsie. In addition to her work on behalf of the Association of KFC Franchises, of which she is past president, Ms. Pfeiffer has devoted her time and energy to sustaining and expanding the philanthropic legacy of Colonel Harland Sanders, founder of the KFC company. She currently serves on the board of directors of the Colonel’s Kids, which provides college scholarships. It is in the spirit of these awards that she has established five scholarships for students entering SUNY Ulster. Recipients must demonstrate self motivation, an entrepreneurial spirit, and be single parents. They must also demonstrate financial need. Preference may be given to students majoring in business, nursing or other health – related fields. Recipients who meet academic criteria may be eligible to receive the scholarship for a second year.

Mrs. Sofia P. Reuner has established an endowed scholarship award in loving memory of her husband and life-long friend, Herbert H. Reuner, who recently passed away. Mr. Reuner was a successful businessman and the owner of Reuner Monuments in Kingston. Therefore, the Herbert H. Reuner Memorial Scholarship Fund will provide an award each year to a student who pursues a business-related course of study. The Herbert H. Reuner Memorial Scholarship encourages excellence in achievement and will be offered to a student accepted into the College Scholars Program.

Karen Zentner was a 22-year-old Ulster County Community College student, engaged to be married at the time of her death. A thoughtless prank caused an otherwise routine drive home from her fiancé's home in Long Island to be the incident of her death. Karen's parents created a scholarship fund which allows the Ulster Community College Foundation, Inc. to give an award each year to a graduating senior from John A. Coleman High School who plans to enter SUNY Ulster as a freshman in the Business Administration program.

John J. Aitken Memorial Scholarship

The John J. Aitken Memorial Scholarship was established in 1976 after John Aitken's death in a tragic automobile accident. John was a second year student at SUNY Ulster majoring in broadcast/journalism at the time of his death. The fund permits the giving of an annual scholarship in his name to a student enrolled in the Communications Program.

Bob Hill Memorial Scholarship

Members of the SUNY Ulster faculty and staff have established a scholarship fund in memory of long-time employee of the College, Bob Hill. Bob is remembered, fondly, for the energy and dedication he demonstrated both on campus and in the community. He supervised the Audio/Visual Department and also provided assistance for other college projects such as videotaping instructional films and photographing events. An award will be giving in his honor to a student who pursues a course of study in Audio/Visual and Communications curricula or to someone who works within the Instructional Media Department.

Mr. Gregory Rabuffo, a longstanding supporter of the College, has continued scholarship funding in memory of his father, Vincent. The recipient of this award may pursue a course of study in either news/journalism or in a food - related curriculum. Mr. Vincent M. Rabuffo became involved in both of these areas through his pioneer reporting on new food services including the introduction of frozen food products to the market. The award is designated for returning or transferring students who are full-time with a minimum of twelve credits, and who have demonstrated financial need.

This scholarship is being established by Helen K. Bartlett in the memory of her brother-in-law, Walter W. Bartlett. Mr. Bartlett was a professor of Mathematics and Computer Science at Ulster County Community College for more than 20 years. To honor Mr. Bartlett for his dedication and excellence in his profession, an annual scholarship will be awarded to a student majoring in Mathematics or Computer Science who will be transferring to a four-year institution. The recipient should have at least a 3.0 cumulative average and demonstrate financial need.

Joseph Friedman served as a Trustee on the Ulster County Community College Board of Trustees for almost twenty years and as Board Chair from 1984-1987. He was serving as chair at the time of his death in 1998. Joe Friedman was respected for his professional expertise, his quiet reserve and unwavering dedication to serving his community. Friends and colleagues established this special scholarship upon learning of Joe's death after a brief illness to honor his thoughtfulness and compassion. A returning SUNY Ulster student majoring in either the humanities or computer science and technology, or planning a career in law, is eligible. Further criteria include an excellent academic record and the completion of at least 12 credits at SUNY Ulster.

In 2003, the Kingston SeniorNet organization established an annual scholarship for students pursuing a course of study in a computer related curriculum with career goals to include word processing or data base management. Olsen of Woodstock, a longtime volunteer with SeniorNet.  The Dexter J. Olsen Computer Education Award will provide tuition support for children ages 4-12 enrolled in computer courses given by SUNY Ulster Continuing Education.

As a provider of leading technology solutions to higher education, SunGard Collegis has been a partner to Ulster County Community College since 1998. In support of SUNY Ulster's students, SunGard Collegis has initiated an annual scholarship for an entering, returning or transferring student who is pursuing a course of study in Computer Science or Computer Information Systems. The recipient is required to be enrolled as a full-time student for at least 12 credit hours with a minimum 3.3 GPA.

The Harriet Tuchman Memorial Scholarship honors the memory of a member of Ulster County Community College's Computer Center. The candidate for this award must be "...a single (divorced, separated or widowed) parent, head of household with dependent children who shows real financial need." It is preferred that the recipient be enrolled in the Data Processing or Computer Science Program at SUNY Ulster.

Michael J. Barthel Memorial Scholarship

The family and friends of Michael Barthel have established a scholarship to honor Michael, his achievements and his commitment to his work. An alumnus of SUNY Ulster, Michael was a recipient of the Jack Lupton Memorial Scholarship for criminal justice students. He graduated summa cum laude from SUNY Albany and received his bachelor's degree in criminal justice. He began his career with the Ulster County Sheriff's Office in 1990 and became an officer with the Kingston Police Department in 1995. He received numerous commendations and awards from both the Sheriff's office and the Kingston Police and became a certified instructor at the Kingston Police Training Academy. To celebrate Michael's service in this field, the recipient of this award will be a returning student who is majoring in criminal justice and is enrolled full-time with a preferred cumulative grade point average of 3.3.

The Rondout Savings Bank has established a scholarship to commemorate the legacy of leadership that defines the late Mayor of Kingston, T.R. Gallo. Contributions have been received from Mayor Gallo's many friends, colleagues, and community members who were saddened by this sudden and premature loss. Mayor Gallo gained prominence within the community for his focus on improving essential services, including reducing crime rates, and for his commitment to restoring Kingston's historic architectural beauty as well as for his concern for the elderly. Two scholarships will be given to entering or returning full-time students who have graduated from either Kingston or Coleman High School and who are pursuing studies in Political Science or Local Government.

Michael Kandl was a conscientious young man who held down two part-time jobs to pay tuition as a full-time Criminal Justice major at SUNY Ulster. In October 1978, Michael died as a result of an unfortunate accident. Aware of his financial problems, Michael's classmates established the Michael Kandl Memorial Scholarship Fund to relieve other students from having to bear similar financial burdens. Candidates for this award should major in Criminal Justice, with plans to transfer to a senior university.

Arthur A. Reilly Memorial Scholarship

The Arthur A. Reilly Memorial Scholarship is available to entering SUNY Ulster students enrolling as Criminal Justice majors. The candidate should possess a high school grade point average of 80% and demonstrate financial need. The student must have held outside paid employment and must intend to pursue a career as a NYS Trooper or a Police Officer. The Reilly Scholarship is awarded in the fall. Students wishing to apply for the Arthur A. Reilly Memorial Scholarship must fill out a special application that is sent directly to eligible Criminal Justice majors. The Chief James K. Riggins, Jr. Memorial Scholarships honor the memory of a man who served his community with dignity and pride. The Robert "Nippy" Lasher Scholarship, established by the Rosendale Police Benevolent Association in 1999, was created to celebrate the life of a man who made a difference in his community and profession. Returning or transferring Criminal Justice majors with a cumulative average of at least 2.00 who demonstrate financial need are eligible. It is preferred that the recipient be a resident of Rosendale.

Joan M. Sinagra Memorial Scholarship

Throughout Ulster County, Joan M. Sinagra left a legacy of accomplishment and a remarkable record of personal involvement. The Ulster County Women's Republican Club, the Third Judicial Federation of Women Voters and the City of Kingston Republican Committee are among many endeavors to which she devoted her time and talent. Joan was a trusted aide to several Republican lawmakers. She was the administrative assistant to state Senator William Larkin and Ulster County representative for Senator Jay Rolison and assemblyman H. Clark Bell. This scholarship in her memory was created by her husband, Anthony V. Sinagra, and family and friends and will be awarded to a student who exemplifies Joan's interest in and commitment to government and politics and who demonstrates leadership ability. Preference will be given to a student who demonstrates financial need and who has a history of community service.

Students who wish to be considered for this award should be graduating from Ulster County Community College, with plans to transfer to a senior college to complete a program in the field of Government. It is preferred that candidates have the desire to serve state and/or local governments.

The Bill Waterous Memorial Scholarship has been established by the Illjes-Waterous extended family along with the Ulster County Deputy Sheriff's PBA and the Woodstock Police Department PBA to honor the memory of a truly dedicated law enforcement professional who was respected by his peers as a "Good Cop". Bill's humanitarian approach to his profession has created a legacy to inspire future generations of law enforcement professionals. This award is established to assist law enforcement officials, their families, and students interested in the field of criminal justice to continue their education.

Candidates should be returning second-year students at Ulster County Community College.

Barbara P. and Edward V. Marrott Scholarship

Ann Marrott, SUNY Ulster's Dean of Community Relations and Enrollment Management, was a scholarship recipient in 1981. Knowing firsthand the differences awards can make for students, Ann established a scholarship in the name of her parents. In May of 1999, the first Marrott Scholarship was awarded. Ann's mother, Barbara, passed away in August of 1999, and in lieu of flowers, family and friends made donations to the Marrott fund, enabling the fund to grow. Ulster County Community College students enrolled in a Health Care or Engineering Program are eligible for this award.

The Aaron E. and Jane M. Shultis Memorial Scholarship Fund was established through a bequest with the intention of assisting returning or graduating and transferring Ulster County Community College students who are majoring in Engineering, or a health-related field.

Professor Derwin H. Stevens Physics Scholarship

SUNY Ulster Professor Emeritus, Derwin H. Stevens, has established a scholarship to be awarded to a graduating and transferring student who has completed at least two consecutive semesters of a physics sequence at SUNY Ulster. Candidates must plan to pursue further education in physics, science education, engineering, or a related field. It is the intent of the donor that the candidate's grades in Physics are given highest priority, but the candidate's performance in other sciences and mathematics should be considered as well. Of second priority is the candidate's ability to understand the processes of science. This scholarship is academically based and science and engineering consensus is required for the award.

In 1999, Eppie Convel and Stan Breite established this endowment in the hope of returning to the community some of the benefits they had derived throughout their lives. Their special interest in education and the environment influence the specific criteria of the fund, which are to assist struggling single parents to earn a degree in the field of environmental studies or teaching.

The Endowment for the Preservation of Natural Resources Scholarship was established with the help of the Endowment's Chairman, Professor Theodore Skaar. Candidates for this award should be returning full-time students with a minimum grade point average of 3.0. The students must demonstrate interest and involvement in environmental issues.

Catskill Mountain Chapter of Trout Unlimited in Memory of Art Flick Scholarship

The Catskill Mountain Chapter of Trout Unlimited sponsors this annual scholarship, in memory of Art Flick. Art Flick was a famous trout fisherman and conservationist in the Catskills who made significant contributions to enhance and publicize trout fishing. Art Flick ran a restaurant and boarding house in Westkill for many years and is the author of The Streamside Guide, a book that has become famous in fishing circles. SUNY Ulster students enrolled in the Environmental Control/Hazardous Waste Program are eligible. The organization chooses the recipient from among the eligible candidates.

Terry A. Humiston Environmental Fund

SUNY Ulster faculty member Michelle A. Rodden and her family recently established the Terry A. Humiston Fund in memory of Michelle's mother. It is hoped the award will assist single parents who offer loving support, without compromise, to their children while they pursue their education. The Terry A. Humiston Award will be given annually to an entering, returning, or transferring student committed to a course of study in Environmental Studies AS. Preference is given to single parents with special consideration given to first generation college students who maintain at least a 2.5 cumulative average.

Mica J. Stanmyer Memorial Scholarship

The Mica J. Stanmyer Memorial Scholarship was established by many friends and family members to honor the memory of a former student of Ulster County Community College, whose life ended in a tragic accident. He was a 2003 honors graduate of Rondout Valley High School where he played soccer and tennis. Mica excelled academically, was a member of the National Honor Society and a member of the Synthesis Club. He was well liked and respected by his peers and his faculty alike. This award will be made to a student who pursues a course of study in Environmental Studies and must demonstrate a commitment to environmental activism.

Phebe Aeberli Memorial Scholarship

The Phebe Aeberli Memorial Scholarship was established by friends and family members to honor the memory of an alumna of Ulster County Community College. A social worker for the Federal Farm Labor Bureau working with migrant labor, she also taught social work at Ulster County Community College and worked for the New York State Department of Mental Hygiene for 25 years, retiring in 1991. She was an active volunteer of the YWCA, the Retired Senior Volunteer Program and the Cabrini Home. This scholarship will be awarded to an entering or returning student who is pursuing a career in social work. Preference will be given to a student who is engaged in community service.

Richard Fredenberg Memorial Scholarship (United Way)

United Way of Ulster County sponsors this annual scholarship in memory of Richard Fredenberg, former Executive Director of United Way, who passed away in 1989. Colleagues of Mr. Fredenberg established this special scholarship to honor him as a great asset to Ulster County. The Richard Fredenberg Memorial Scholarship is intended for returning or graduating and transferring students who are Ulster County residents majoring in some aspect of Human Services.

Marcia and Harry Resnick Scholarship in Memory of Trudy Resnick Farber

Marcia and Harry Resnick, two important leaders and members of the community, have supported Ulster County Community College through a scholarship in memory of their daughter since 1989. The Marcia and Harry Resnick Scholarship in Memory of Trudy Resnick Farber is awarded annually to two Ellenville High School graduates planning to enter SUNY Ulster. Preference is given to Human Services majors but all majors are eligible. The two recipients receive substantial tuition assistance for two full years.

Rabbi Alice Stein and Marla Stein Memorial Scholarship

Jaime Solov, a May 1999 graduate of SUNY Ulster, along with her grandmother, Lila Reiter, have established a scholarship in memory of two special individuals whose lives ended as the result of a tragic accident. The recipient of the Rabbi Alice Stein and Marla Stein Memorial Scholarship will be chosen by Ms. Solov and Ms. Reiter. Full-time SUNY Ulster students who are either entering, returning or transferring with an eventual career goal in Human Services and who demonstrate financial need are eligible. Female students will receive first preference.

Walter W. Bartlett Memorial Scholarship

This scholarship is being established by Helen K. Bartlett in the memory of her brother-in-law, Walter W. Bartlett. Mr. Bartlett was a professor of Mathematics and Computer Science at Ulster County Community College for more than 20 years. To honor Mr. Bartlett for his dedication and excellence in his profession, an annual scholarship will be awarded to a student majoring in Mathematics or Computer Science who will be transferring to a four-year institution. The recipient should have at least a 3.0 cumulative average and demonstrate financial need.

The Professor Ann LeFevre Gilchrist Scholarship has been established by Behavioral Sciences Professor Emerita, Ann Gilchrist. The recipients of this annual award must have a cumulative average of at least 3.0 and plan to transfer to a four-year institution to continue their education in the Liberal Arts.

Ms. Godwin is a SUNY Ulster Visiting Artist and the commencement speaker for 2004. Ms. Godwin holds an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters from the State University of New York.
