Ulster Community College Foundation, Inc.SUNY Ulster's students have been served by the Ulster Community College Foundation, Inc. since 1976. The Foundation provides special enrichment opportunities, including programs, speakers, equipment to enhance the learning environment, scholarships and technological resources. In addition to the support of educational and cultural programs, the Foundation awards over $100,000 in scholarships annually. These awards enable students to begin or continue their educations at SUNY Ulster, or to further their studies by transferring to four-year schools. GENERAL ACADEMICBarbara A. Adams Scholarship President Donald C. Katt, with support from faculty and staff, initiated the Barbara A. Adams Scholarship to recognize the contributions of Ulster County Community College's retired President. Ms. Adams is acknowledged for her dedication and innovative contributions to the College during her tenure. The fund will provide an annual award to a student who is accepted as an honors student at SUNY Ulster. Ms. Adams was committed to promoting student pride and achievement. The award will be given to a student who exemplifies the standard of excellence that President Adams hoped all students would strive to attain. Sherman Adin and Carol E. Adin Scholarship Fund The Ulster County Community College is a grateful recipient of a charitable bequest through the Estate of Carol E. Adin who passed away on July 13, 2002. In accordance with the donor's wishes, the Sherman Adin and Carol E. Adin Fund has been established to support SUNY Ulster's scholarship program. The scholarship will become available to Ulster County residents who attend Ulster County Community College or to graduates of SUNY Ulster who are transferring to an accredited college located in New York State. American Association of University Women Scholarship The American Association of University Women Scholarship was established to financially assist students in completing their education at four-year universities. The successful candidate is chosen by a committee of AAUW members. Anonymous Scholarship The generosity of two anonymous Saugerties residents provides annual funding for full tuition to a Kingston High School graduate who is entering Ulster County Community College. The donors actively participate in the selection of the recipients and are interested in students who have demonstrated effort in attaining academic achievement. Braby/Blackwell Family Memorial Scholarship The Braby/Blackwell Family Memorial Scholarship continues to ease the financial burden of attending college for many deserving students. Recipients reside in the town or village of Saugerties. The Carlin Trust The Carlin Trust Fund was established to provide financial support to deserving students at Ulster County Community College. Colonial Cooperative Insurance Scholarship: In Memory of Joan Albin The members of the Colonial Cooperative Insurance have established this annual scholarship in memory of Joan Albin. The recipient will be an entering, returning or transferring student. Lucille Clark Cyr Memorial Scholarship Lucille Clark Cyr, sister of Barbara Schmidt, Assistant to the SUNY Ulster President, committed her life to befriend, assist, and provide support to others. Through the generosity of her family the scholarship pays tribute to the life of Lucille who shared so much with others. Ms. Schmidt chooses from among those recommended by the committee as representing the traits Ms. Cyr admired. Daughters of the American Revolution; Wiltwyck Chapter, NS; Dame Margarette Hendrickse Van Keuren Memorial & Governor George Clinton Memorial Scholarship The Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) Scholarships are $500 U.S. Treasury savings bonds given out annually to two returning or graduating students, one male and one female, who are pursuing degrees which will benefit the community. Recipients have demonstrated commitment to community service. Frank G. Elliott Scholarship The Frank G. Elliott Scholarship was established through a bequest of Grace E. Elliott in memory of her brother. Candidates for this award may be either entering or returning students and should be residents of New Paltz. Michael Finnegan Memorial Scholarship The Howard C. St. John family has generously created a scholarship in memory of their friend, Michael Finnegan, who was tragically lost in the September 11, 2001 Twin Towers attack. Michael Finnegan, as a Kingston high school student, established himself as the area's premier amateur golfer. Michael was also known for his outstanding leadership qualities. He is remembered by his family as a loving husband, father of three young children, son and brother. Gertrude Gifford Scholarship The Gertrude Gifford Scholarship was established through the bequest of Ms. Gifford, with the intention of helping students finance their education. There is no specific requirement stipulated for this award. Fred and Dale Guerra Memorial Scholarship The Fred and Dale Guerra Memorial Scholarship is intended for a returning adult student. Charles Haas Memorial Scholarship Charlie, at age 17, a member of the High Falls Fire Department and an enlistee in the U.S. Air Force, was killed in the line of duty in 1981. The scholarships are available, one time only, to graduating seniors of Ulster County High Schools accepted by two or four year colleges. Hudson Landing Scholarship In support of SUNY Ulster's students, Hudson Landing has initiated a scholarship for a full-time returning or transferring student with a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0, who has demonstrated financial need, and resides in the City of Kingston or the Town of Ulster . Preference will be given to students pursuing a course of study in Industrial Technology or Business Administration with a career goal that includes Real Estate Planning or Land Development. International Education Forum Scholarship The International Education Forum Scholarship was created by two former staff members of Ulster County Community College, W. John Dunn and Daryl Magill. Viola C. Jansen Scholarship The Viola C. Jansen Scholarship was established through a bequest. The scholarship is awarded to entering, returning or graduating students at Ulster County Community College. It is preferred that the scholarship be given to graduates from a Shawangunk area high school (Wallkill or Pine Bush). Dr. Richard Katims Scholarship
Frederick and Ellen Katt Memorial Scholarship Through the generosity and kindness of their family, and members of the faculty and staff, the parents of Ulster County Community College's President, Donald C. Katt, will be forever remembered. The Frederick and Ellen Katt Memorial Scholarship will be awarded to a student who has demonstrated high academic achievement while attending SUNY Ulster. Kentucky Fried Chicken Scholarship This scholarship is made possible through the generosity of Darlene Pfeiffer, chief executive officer and the holder of two Kentucky Fried Chicken Franchises located in Kingston and Poughkeepsie. In addition to her work on behalf of the Association of KFC Franchises, of which she is past president, Ms. Pfeiffer has devoted her time and energy to sustaining and expanding the philanthropic legacy of Colonel Harland Sanders, founder of the KFC company. She currently serves on the board of directors of the Colonel’s Kids, which provides college scholarships. It is in the spirit of these awards that she has established five scholarships for students entering SUNY Ulster. Recipients must demonstrate self motivation, an entrepreneurial spirit, and be single parents. They must also demonstrate financial need. Preference may be given to students majoring in business, nursing or other health – related fields. Recipients who meet academic criteria may be eligible to receive the scholarship for a second year. Kingston Masonic Lodge #10, F. & A.M. Scholarship The Masonic Lodge of Kingston sponsors annual scholarships through the Ulster Community College Foundation, Inc. This scholarship is awarded to entering or returning students who are themselves Masons, or who are wives, children, grandchildren, nieces or nephews of Masonic Lodge members. Hornbeck Memorial Scholarships The Kingston Professional Firefighters' Association sponsors an annual scholarship in memory of Harry E. Hornbeck, a Professional Firefighter and active union member who was committed to improving the livelihood of his brother professionals. Mr. Hornbeck passed away in July of 1990, at the age of 44. The Kingston Professional Firefighters' Association: Harry E. Hornbeck Memorial Scholarship honors the contributions Mr. Hornbeck made to his community. Graduating seniors from any Ulster County High School who are planning to enter SUNY Ulster to continue their studies are eligible for this award. Kiwanis Club of Kingston The Kiwanis Club of Kingston sponsors an annual scholarship through the Ulster Community College Foundation, Inc., to be awarded to a returning student at SUNY Ulster, who is, preferably, a resident of Kingston. Jay and Lucia de L. Klock Foundation of Kingston Scholarship The Klock Foundation of Kingston has established the Jay and Lucia de L. Klock Foundation Scholarship Fund to provide awards annually to SUNY Ulster students. Professor Keith LaBudde Scholarship Established in 1994 to honor Professor LaBudde for his years of service to the Ulster County Community College campus community, this scholarship is awarded annually to a returning or transferring student. Professor LaBudde continues to support the fund with annual contributions. The Learning Center Scholarship The staff of the Learning Center recognizes students who are academic achievers and want to continue to succeed. This scholarship is established to recognize deserving students who continue to strive toward their educational goal. Eligible students can be attending full or part-time and must have taken and successfully completed ISP 070, 080, 081 and 091, COS 101 (College Skills) and/or any developmental courses in Math, Writing or Reading and be maintaining at least a 2.8 cumulative GPA. To apply for this scholarship click here. Nancy Olsen Lynch Collegian Scholarship Fund Nancy Olsen Lynch established the Ulster County Career Day for high school students in 1998. The conference has become an annual event that provides high school sophomores the opportunity to meet with professionals from various career fields. Nancy's friends and colleagues have established a scholarship in her honor. This scholarship is awarded to entering students who have completed 6 or more SUNY Ulster Collegian Program credits and plan to enroll full-time at SUNY Ulster. Patricia L. Maue Memorial Scholarship Fund As a result of the generosity of Patricia Maue, a former staff member of SUNY Ulster's Small Business Development Center, this scholarship will be established upon the distribution of annuities to benefit an entering or returning full-time female student with a cumulative average of at least 3.5. McCann/Pezzino Memorial Scholarship The McCann/Pezzino Memorial Scholarship honors the parents of Carl & Madeline Pezzino. Madeline is a member of SUNY Ulster's campus community and has ably served SUNY Ulster students in her capacity as Admissions Counselor for many years. Rondout Valley High School graduates are eligible for this award. Carl and Madeline will select the recipient. Mid-Hudson Valley Federal Credit Union Scholarship Chartered in 1963, the Mid-Hudson Valley Federal Credit Union serves anyone who lives, works, worships or volunteers in Ulster, Orange or Dutchess County, as well as businesses and other legal entities. MHV has demonstrated its commitment to the community through ongoing support of such causes as the American Cancer Society, Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, American Heart Association and United Way. In support of education, MHVCU has established two scholarships with the Ulster Community College Foundation, Inc. One scholarship will be awarded to an entering, returning or transferring student who is a member of Mid-Hudson Valley Federal Credit Union. In addition to membership requirement, a second recipient will be chosen who demonstrates a commitment to community service. Carl J. Mihm, Jr. Memorial Scholarship Carl J. Mihm, Jr. was an Ulster County Community College employee. Mr. Mihm was diagnosed with an inoperable form of cancer, and colleagues remember his bravery as he continued to work throughout his chemotherapy treatment. One of his many accomplishments at SUNY Ulster was the organization and planning of the College's 25th Anniversary Dinner Dance held at Mohonk Mountain House. The Carl J. Mihm, Jr. Memorial Scholarship, supported by Carl's family and friends, has been established to assist returning or graduating and transferring SUNY Ulster students, preferably enrolled in the PACE Program. John H. Moehle Memorial Scholarship The John H. Moehle Memorial Scholarship is in honor of a former supervising principal of the Onteora School District for the years 1948-1951 and 1953-1959. A major accomplishment of Mr. Moehle's was the organization of the Civil Defense Program for all New York State Schools while working for the State Department of Education in Albany between the years 1951 and 1953. Mr. Moehle was a valuable asset to the town of Phoenicia and served as board member and president of the Phoenicia Library and other groups. The John H. Moehle Memorial will be awarded to students who have graduated from or are graduating from Onteora High School. Gerald "Jay" Neuhoff Memorial Scholarship The Gerald "Jay" Neuhoff Memorial Scholarship is intended for physically challenged Ulster County Community College students, with preference given to those with hemophilia. This scholarship is supported by SUNY Ulster faculty and staff to honor and remember the beloved son of retired SUNY Ulster staff member, Joan Neuhoff. Patricia M. O'Brien Memorial Scholarship The Patricia M. O'Brien Memorial Scholarship will be awarded to "a special student who needs a little extra help to finish SUNY Ulster." This scholarship was established by Ms. O'Brien's family. Louis and Sophie Offerman Palkowics Memorial Scholarship Mrs. Herbert Reuner has initiated this scholarship in loving memory of her parents Louis and Sophie Offermann Palkowics who, while visiting relatives in Rifton, fell in love with the area and moved there from Brooklyn in 1922. Although Mr. Palkowics had been employed as a butcher in Brooklyn, he soon began working for Central Hudson helping to build the Dashville Dam. Within a very short time, he was promoted to become the operator of the facility. Mrs. Reuner remembers both of her parents as dedicated, loving, and supportive individuals who were great achievers but always in a quiet and unassuming way. She recalls that her father was so well-liked that when he retired after many years at Central Hudson, his retirement dinner was the largest in the history of the company. Organization of Professional and Administrative Personnel (OPAP) Scholarship The Organization of Professional and Administrative Personnel (OPAP) sponsors an annual scholarship for returning Ulster County Community College students. OPAP represents College administrative staff and is committed to the quality of the College and to assisting its students. P.E.O. Sisterhood Scholarship The P.E.O. Sisterhood sponsors an annual scholarship through the Ulster Community College Foundation, Inc. This off-campus sorority has been furthering women's education since 1869. Graduating and transferring SUNY Ulster students who plan to continue their education and demonstrate financial need are eligible for the P.E.O. Sisterhood Scholarships. Non-traditional, female students in need receive first priority.
Ruth Pacini Satterfield, Veronica Pacini & Patricia Pacini Honorary Scholarship This scholarship is intended for Ulster County Community College students who demonstrate financial need and have a cumulative average of at least 2.5. This award recognizes that perseverance and effort required to attain schooling (such as necessity to work, care of others, being a single parent, disability) may take precedence over scholastic ability or grade attainment as long as the recipient works to his/her ability under the circumstances and maintains required academic standards. Phi Theta Kappa Scholarship Returning Ulster County Community College students who are members of Phi Theta Kappa are eligible for the Phi Theta Kappa Scholarship. Professor Milton L. Reynolds Memorial Scholarship Milton L. Reynolds was a professor and chairman of the Computer Information Systems/Computer Science Department at Ulster County Community College. Mr. Reynolds had been looking forward to spending his future years at the retirement home he and his wife had built in Little Falls, NY. He passed away, just days before his planned retirement. It is preferred that the Professor Milton L. Reynolds Memorial Scholarship be awarded to a prison education or minority student. Rondout Valley Teacher's Federation Paraprofessional Unit Scholarship The members of the Rondout Valley Paraprofessional Unit created this scholarship in 1987 to benefit a graduate of Rondout Valley High School. The membership selects the recipients. Professor Joseph K. Schwarz Memorial Scholarship The Professor Joseph K. Schwarz Memorial Scholarship honors the memory of a former educator at Ulster County Community College. Professor Schwarz was considered a dedicated teacher and a unique individual by his friends and colleagues, and a great inspiration to his students. St. James Methodist Church: Evelyn Wright Scholarship In 1999, the St. James United Methodist Church began sponsorship of a special scholarship to be awarded to one student each year for five years. This scholarship will cover two years of full tuition for each student. Recipients will be chosen by the St. James United Methodist Church. Three of the five scholarships will be awarded to St. Clara's "King's Kids." All recipients shall demonstrate financial need and be considered at high risk. Ulster County Community College Faculty Association Scholarship The Ulster County Community College Faculty Association sponsors an annual scholarship to be awarded to SUNY Ulster students. There is no stipulation of specific criteria for this award. Ulster County Community College Scholars Program Ulster County residents who graduate in the top ten percent of their high school graduating class with Regents diplomas are eligible to participate in the College Scholars Program and receive a full-tuition scholarship to attend SUNY Ulster. Candidates should meet further criteria by being enrolled full-time within two semesters following high school graduation. Candidates shall not have attended any other college. Ulster County Scouting Award: Frank Skidmore Scholarship The Ulster County Scouting Awards have been established by former Foundation Board member Frank Skidmore. The recipients, one male and one female, may be either returning or transferring students. Involvement in Scouting is a preference for this award. Ulster County Volunteer Firemen's Association Inc. Scholarship This newly established scholarship fund is the result of the efforts of the Ulster County Volunteer Firemen's Association. Ulster-Greene Dental Study Club Scholarship The Ulster-Greene Dental Study Club sponsors an annual scholarship based upon academic achievement. Returning or graduating and transferring Ulster County Community College students with relatively high grade point averages are eligible. A preference has been expressed that the recipient be an Ulster or Greene County resident. Ulster Savings Bank Scholarship awarded through the Ulster Community College Foundation, Inc. A scholarship fund has been established by Ulster Savings Bank through which returning or transferring SUNY Ulster students with cumulative averages of at least 3.3 will be eligible for awards. The recipients must have taken at least 12 credits at SUNY Ulster. To apply for this scholarship please use the Foundation's general scholarship application for returning and transferring students. Grace E. VanBenschoten Scholarship Established through a generous bequest by Grace E. VanBenschoten, a scholarship fund in her name enables the Ulster Community College Foundation, Inc. to award scholarships to deserving SUNY Ulster students. There has been no criteria stated as to recipient status or program of study. Karl & Catherine Weibrecht Memorial Scholarship A generous bequest by the estate of Karl O. Weibrecht has established a scholarship fund through the Ulster Community College Foundation, Inc. to be awarded to SUNY Ulster students. Robert O. Davenport Memorial Scholarship Robert O. Davenport earned a degree in agriculture from the Cornell School of Agriculture and Life Sciences. As a boy of 14, Mr. Davenport learned first hand about farming at Davenport Farms in Stone Ridge. He was an avid fisherman, hunter, skier, and golfer. Mr. Davenport gave his time to the community as a volunteer and leader in a number of organizations including as a founding director of the Ulster Community College Foundation, Inc., serving for 29 years. Family and Friends have established this scholarship to honor his commitment to SUNY Ulster and the community in which he lived. Recipients are transferring students who wish to pursue a career in such areas as agriculture, wildlife conservation or other aspects of environmental studies. Preference is given to students attending Cornell or SUNY ESF.

Coleen Hughes Memorial Scholarship The Coleen Hughes Memorial Scholarship is in memory of a popular, enthusiastic and friendly Ulster County Community College Alumna. Coleen Hughes graduated as a Recreation Leadership major in 1981 and was employed with the Kingston Department of Parks and Recreation. Coleen gained great respect in the community in this position. In 1985, she died in an automobile accident. Coleen's friends, family, and associates established a permanent award to carry on her spirit. Candidates should be either returning or transferring to a four-year college or university. They should major in Recreation Leadership or in Individual Studies with a concentration in Recreation. While grades are taken into consideration, all students regardless of cumulative average are considered. The scholarship committee will choose a recipient who best demonstrates Coleen's love for life and service to others. James P. Mertes Memorial Scholarship The James P. Mertes Memorial Scholarship, established through the Ulster Community College Foundation, Inc., has been supported by friends and family of Mr. Mertes who hold an annual Golf Tournament in his name to raise funds for these awards. Frank Sena Memorial Scholarship Robert Sena, long-term Emeritus Professor of Biology and now a member of the Adjunct Faculty at SUNY Ulster, has established an annual scholarship in memory of his father, Frank Sena. Professor Sena's intent is to assist a student pursuing a research or teaching career in the fields of pharmacology, biochemistry, genetics, cell biology or pharmacy. He hopes to reflect his father's values and dedication to his own work for over twenty years at Pfizer Inc., and to recognize the benefits of products developed for both human and animal use. A grade point average of 3.3 is preferred and the recipient must be a returning or transferring full-time student. Financial need is a factor in determining this award. BUSINESS ADMINISTRATIONBedell Family Scholarship Fund The Bedell Family Scholarship Fund was established by Faculty Emeritus Alfred Bedell and his brother, Harold, a retired Dutchess County Sheriff's Department Lieutenant, in memory of Alfred J. and Frances S. Bedell who valued education, personal integrity, and civic responsibility. The purpose of this fund is to provide financial assistance to full- and part-time students enrolled in the Business and/or the Criminal Justice programs. Chamber of Commerce of Ulster County Scholarship In an effort to assist Ulster County students with the rising costs of college education, the Chamber of Commerce of Ulster County has established a scholarship program that awards students who are Ulster County residents pursuing a Business Administration degree or have career goals in business. Recipients may be entering or returning to Ulster County Community College or students who are graduating from Ulster County Community College and transferring to SUNY New Paltz. The recipients are selected from the Ulster Community College Foundation, Inc. applicants by the Executive Committee of the Chamber of Commerce of Ulster County. Thomas D. Connelly Memorial Textbook Award Cornelia Denvir, Department Chair of Business and Professional Studies, family members, and friends have established this fund to honor a beloved father, husband, colleague and friend. Thomas D. Connelly received a bachelor's degree from Holy Cross College in Worcester , Mass. , and later attended graduate school at Syracuse University for sales, management, and marketing. Mr. Connelly worked for Wyeth Laboratories for 13 years and Bristol Laboratories for 22 years and at the time of his retirement he was director of sales and marketing at Bristol Laboratories. Mr. Connelly gave his time to the community as a volunteer and leader in a number of organizations including as a founding director of the Ulster Community College Foundation, Inc., serving for 9 years (or from 1992 thru 2000.) This fund will provide support for returning students who have financial need and are in the Business Administration program to purchase textbooks.

In addition to her work on behalf of the Association of KFC Franchises, of which she is past president, Ms. Pfeiffer has devoted her time and energy to sustaining and expanding the philanthropic legacy of Colonel Harland Sanders, founder of the KFC company. She currently serves on the board of directors of the Colonel’s Kids, which provides college scholarships. It is in the spirit of these awards that she has established five scholarships for students entering SUNY Ulster. Recipients must demonstrate self motivation, an entrepreneurial spirit, and be single parents. They must also demonstrate financial need. Sawyer Savings Bank Scholarship Established in 2004, this scholarship is awarded to full-time students pursuing a career in business and a second student enrolled in the SUNY Ulster nursing program. Ann B. and John C. Smith Scholarship The Ann B. and John C. Smith Scholarship was established by Mr. and Mrs. Smith in order to provide financial assistance to returning or graduating and transferring Ulster County Community College Business Majors. Spearman Family Scholarship William Spearman, Treasurer of the Ulster Community College Foundation, Inc., and his wife Brenda, have established a scholarship fund to be awarded to SUNY Ulster students. Returning students who are pursuing a degree in Business Administration full-time are eligible for the Spearman Family Scholarship. The first award will be given in 2005. Ulster County Board of Realtors Scholarship The Ulster County Board of Realtors sponsors an annual scholarship through the Ulster Community College Foundation, Inc., to be awarded to a returning or graduating and transferring Ulster County Community College Business Major. Ulster Federal Credit Union Scholarship in Memory of Calvin M. Cunningham The Ulster Federal Credit Union will provide two annual awards to entering students who are pursuing a course of study in Business. The recipients must be Ulster County residents, enrolled full-time. Recipients must also be members of the Ulster Federal Credit Union. Aitken Memorial Scholarship was established in 1976 after John Aitken's death in a tragic automobile accident. John was a second year student at SUNY Ulster majoring in broadcast/journalism at the time of his death. The fund permits the giving of an annual scholarship in his name to a student enrolled in the Communications Program. Daily Freeman's 20-Year Club Scholarship The Daily Freeman has been an important contributor to the Ulster Community College Foundation, Inc.'s scholarship fund for over two decades. In 1995, The Daily Freeman's 20-Year Club Scholarship was created in order to assist transferring Ulster students in completing their studies in Journalism. Bob Hill Memorial Scholarship Members of the SUNY Ulster faculty and staff have established a scholarship fund in memory of long-time employee of the College, Bob Hill. Bob is remembered, fondly, for the energy and dedication he demonstrated both on campus and in the community. He supervised the Audio/Visual Department and also provided assistance for other college projects such as videotaping instructional films and photographing events. An award will be giving in his honor to a student who pursues a course of study in Audio/Visual and Communications curricula or to someone who works within the Instructional Media Department. Vincent M. Rabuffo Memorial Scholarship Mr. Gregory Rabuffo, a longstanding supporter of the College, has continued scholarship funding in memory of his father, Vincent. The recipient of this award may pursue a course of study in either news/journalism or in a food - related curriculum. Mr. Vincent M. Rabuffo became involved in both of these areas through his pioneer reporting on new food services including the introduction of frozen food products to the market. The award is designated for returning or transferring students who are full-time with a minimum of twelve credits, and who have demonstrated financial need. Joseph Friedman Memorial Scholarship Joseph Friedman served as a Trustee on the Ulster County Community College Board of Trustees for almost twenty years and as Board Chair from 1984-1987. He was serving as chair at the time of his death in 1998. Joe Friedman was respected for his professional expertise, his quiet reserve and unwavering dedication to serving his community. Friends and colleagues established this special scholarship upon learning of Joe's death after a brief illness to honor his thoughtfulness and compassion. A returning SUNY Ulster student majoring in either the humanities or computer science and technology, or planning a career in law, is eligible. Further criteria include an excellent academic record and the completion of at least 12 credits at SUNY Ulster. The Kingston SeniorNet Scholarship In 2003, the Kingston SeniorNet organization established an annual scholarship for students pursuing a course of study in a computer related curriculum with career goals to include word processing or data base management. Harriet Tuchman Memorial Scholarship The Harriet Tuchman Memorial Scholarship honors the memory of a member of Ulster County Community College's Computer Center. The candidate for this award must be "...a single (divorced, separated or widowed) parent, head of household with dependent children who shows real financial need." It is preferred that the recipient be enrolled in the Data Processing or Computer Science Program at SUNY Ulster. Todd Wonderly Memorial Scholarship Following the death of former Ulster County Community College student, Todd Wonderly, a memorial scholarship was established in his name. Wonderly was a loved and respected alumnus, and this special fund will honor him in perpetuity. Returning or graduating and transferring SUNY Ulster Computer Science Majors are eligible for the Todd Wonderly Memorial Scholarship. CONTINUING AND PROFESSIONAL EDUCATIONContinuing and Professional Education Tuition Assistance Award The staff at the Business Resource Center established this award for students enrolled in non-credit courses through SUNY Ulster's Continuing and Professional Educaiton Department. Barthel Memorial Scholarship The family and friends of Michael Barthel have established a scholarship to honor Michael, his achievements and his commitment to his work. An alumnus of SUNY Ulster, Michael was a recipient of the Jack Lupton Memorial Scholarship for criminal justice students. He graduated summa cum laude from SUNY Albany and received his bachelor's degree in criminal justice. He began his career with the Ulster County Sheriff's Office in 1990 and became an officer with the Kingston Police Department in 1995. He received numerous commendations and awards from both the Sheriff's office and the Kingston Police and became a certified instructor at the Kingston Police Training Academy. To celebrate Michael's service in this field, the recipient of this award will be a returning student who is majoring in criminal justice and is enrolled full-time with a preferred cumulative grade point average of 3.3. Noreen Baumgarten Memorial Scholarship The Noreen Baumgarten Memorial Scholarship was established in 1996 to financially support returning SUNY Ulster students enrolled in the Criminal Justice Program and maintaining high academic standards. Bedell Family Scholarship Fund The Bedell Family Scholarship Fund was established by Faculty Emeritus Alfred Bedell and his brother, Harold, a retired Dutchess County Sheriff's Department Lieutenant, in memory of Alfred J. and Frances S. Michael Kandl Memorial Scholarship
George Krupica Law Enforcement Scholarships SUNY Ulster alumnus and retired law enforcement professional, George Krupica has established two scholarships for students who are pursing careers in criminal justice and law enforcement. The George Krupica Criminal Justice Scholarship shall be given to a full-time student who holds the highest GPA as a criminal justice major. The recipient may be an entering, returning, or graduating student. The George Krupica Police Academy Award will be granted to a graduate of SUNY Ulster's Policy Academy Program who holds the highest cumulative GPA in his or her class. As a former scholarship recipient, Mr. Krupica is especially pleased to offer these awards to assist students with achieving their educational goals. Mid-Hudson Financial Security Officers Association Scholarship The Mid-Hudson Financial Security Officers' Association is a non-profit organization comprised of 30 financial institutions in the Hudson Valley, NY area whose members are actively engaged in preventing fraud and raising security awareness throughout the region. The Association actively partners with law enforcement to protect financial institutions from fraud, security risks and to prevent fraud victimization of the public. This scholarship is awarded to entering or returning full-time students pursuing a course of study in Criminal Justice or students enrolled in the Police Academy who plan to pursue a career in law enforcement or in the criminal justice field. Police Chiefs' Association: Noreen Baumgarten Memorial Scholarship and Jack Lupton Memorial Scholarship The Police Chiefs' Association sponsors two scholarships that are awarded annually to SUNY Ulster students. Graduating and transferring Criminal Justice majors are eligible for the Noreen Baumgarten and Jack Lupton Memorials. Arthur A. Reilly Memorial Scholarship The Arthur A. Reilly Memorial Scholarship is available to entering SUNY Ulster students enrolling as Criminal Justice majors. The candidate should possess a high school grade point average of 80% and demonstrate financial need. The student must have held outside paid employment and must intend to pursue a career as a NYS Trooper or a Police Officer. The Reilly Scholarship is awarded in the fall. Riggins, Jr. Memorial Scholarships honor the memory of a man who served his community with dignity and pride. Returning full-time Criminal Justice majors at Ulster County Community College are eligible for these awards. This scholarship has been established with support from Chief Riggin's family, his many friends, and the Kingston Gold Shields. Rosendale Police Benevolent Association; Robert "Nippy" Lasher Scholarship The Robert "Nippy" Lasher Scholarship, established by the Rosendale Police Benevolent Association in 1999, was created to celebrate the life of a man who made a difference in his community and profession. Returning or transferring Criminal Justice majors with a cumulative average of at least 2.00 who demonstrate financial need are eligible. It is preferred that the recipient be a resident of Rosendale. Joan M. Sinagra Memorial Scholarship Throughout Ulster County, Joan M. Sinagra left a legacy of accomplishment and a remarkable record of personal involvement. The Ulster County Women's Republican Club, the Third Judicial Federation of Women Voters and the City of Kingston Republican Committee are among many endeavors to which she devoted her time and talent. Joan was a trusted aide to several Republican lawmakers. She was the administrative assistant to state Senator William Larkin and Ulster County representative for Senator Jay Rolison and assemblyman H. Clark Bell. This scholarship in her memory was created by her husband, Anthony V. Sinagra, and family and friends and will be awarded to a student who exemplifies Joan's interest in and commitment to government and politics and who demonstrates leadership ability. Preference will be given to a student who demonstrates financial need and who has a history of community service. Ulster County Association of Superintendents of Highways Scholarship Students who wish to be considered for this award should be graduating from Ulster County Community College, with plans to transfer to a senior college to complete a program in the field of Government. It is preferred that candidates have the desire to serve state and/or local governments. Ulster County Deputy Sheriffs' Police Benevolent Association Scholarship The members of the Ulster County Deputy Sheriffs' PBA provide scholarships to students who demonstrate academic achievement and have completed the Police Basic Training Program. Recipients must plan to continue their education at Ulster County Community College or a 4 year college while pursuing a career in law enforcement. Barbara P. and Edward V. Marrott Scholarship Ann Marrott, SUNY Ulster's Dean of Community Relations and Enrollment Management, was a scholarship recipient in 1981. Knowing firsthand the differences awards can make for students, Ann established a scholarship in the name of her parents. In May of 1999, the first Marrott Scholarship was awarded. Ann's mother, Barbara, passed away in August of 1999, and in lieu of flowers, family and friends made donations to the Marrott fund, enabling the fund to grow. The Olivia Rose Belfiglio Memorial Scholarship was established by the Ulster County Legislature, friends and family members to honor the memory of Kingston High School alumna, Olivia Rose Belfiglio. Olivia attended Kingston High School before transferring to Saugerties in her junior year. She enjoyed drawing, painting, photography, and snowboarding, and had been a member of the Kingston High School girls cross-country team. Olivia loved the outdoors and was a member of the Town of Esopus Environmental Board. Olivia had planned to take courses in Environmental Studies at SUNY Ulster during her senior year. The Olivia Rose Belfiglio Memorial Scholarship will be awarded to a full or part-time, entering or returning student who graduated from Kingston High School and plans to pursue a course of study in Environmental Studies at SUNY Ulster and has a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or higher. |

Endowment for the Preservation of Natural Resources Scholarship
The Endowment for the Preservation of Natural Resources Scholarship was established with the help of the Endowment's Chairman, Professor Theodore Skaar. Candidates for this award should be returning full-time students with a minimum grade point average of 3.0. The students must demonstrate interest and involvement in environmental issues.
Catskill Mountain Chapter of Trout Unlimited in Memory of Art Flick Scholarship
The Catskill Mountain Chapter of Trout Unlimited sponsors this annual scholarship, in memory of Art Flick. Art Flick was a famous trout fisherman and conservationist in the Catskills who made significant contributions to enhance and publicize trout fishing. Art Flick ran a restaurant and boarding house in Westkill for many years and is the author of The Streamside Guide, a book that has become famous in fishing circles. SUNY Ulster students enrolled in the Environmental Control/Hazardous Waste Program are eligible. The organization chooses the recipient from among the eligible candidates.
Mica J. Stanmyer Memorial Scholarship
The Mica J. Stanmyer Memorial Scholarship was established by many friends and family members to honor the memory of a former student of Ulster County Community College, whose life ended in a tragic accident. He was a 2003 honors graduate of Rondout Valley High School where he played soccer and tennis. Mica excelled academically, was a member of the National Honor Society and a member of the Synthesis Club. He was well liked and respected by his peers and his faculty alike. This award will be made to a student who pursues a course of study in Environmental Studies and must demonstrate a commitment to environmental activism.

Phebe Aeberli Memorial Scholarship
The Phebe Aeberli Memorial Scholarship was established by friends and family members to honor the memory of an alumna of Ulster County Community College. A social worker for the Federal Farm Labor Bureau working with migrant labor, she also taught social work at Ulster County Community College and worked for the New York State Department of Mental Hygiene for 25 years, retiring in 1991. She was an active volunteer of the YWCA, the Retired Senior Volunteer Program and the Cabrini Home. This scholarship will be awarded to an entering or returning student who is pursuing a career in social work. Preference will be given to a student who is engaged in community service.

A graduate of Seton Hall University and a Professor of Philosophy at SUNY Ulster for 28 years, Tom's dedication to learning was his life's work, his passion and his legacy. Tom was a beloved member of the campus community and will be deeply missed by his many colleagues and the students whose lives he has touched. At the memorial services held in Tom's memory and in celebration of his life, many individuals stepped forward to speak about his qualities of deep compassion, good humor, and great wisdom. His passing has profoundly touched all who were fortunate enough to have known him. Friends and family members have established this scholarship as a most fitting way to reflect his life's work as a professor of philosophy who inspired his students to lead more meaningful lives. Emery W. Flavin Memorial Scholarship
The Emery W. Flavin Memorial Scholarship was established by family members and friends to honor the memory of Professor Emeritus, Emery Flavin. After graduating from Bates College and receiving his Masters degree from Boston University, he taught Sociology at Ulster County Community College from 1968 to 1986. The first scholarship will be awarded in 2011 to a student who has completed one or more Sociology courses and has a cumulative grade point average of 2.7 or higher.
Richard Fredenberg Memorial Scholarship (United Way)
United Way of Ulster County sponsors this annual scholarship in memory of Richard Fredenberg, former Executive Director of United Way, who passed away in 1989. Colleagues of Mr. Fredenberg established this special scholarship to honor him as a great asset to Ulster County. The Richard Fredenberg Memorial Scholarship is intended for returning or graduating and transferring students who are Ulster County residents majoring in some aspect of Human Services.
Marcia and Harry Resnick Scholarship in Memory of Trudy Resnick Farber
Marcia and Harry Resnick, two important leaders and members of the community, have supported Ulster County Community College through a scholarship in memory of their daughter since 1989. The Marcia and Harry Resnick Scholarship in Memory of Trudy Resnick Farber is awarded annually to two Ellenville High School graduates planning to enter SUNY Ulster. Preference is given to Human Services majors but all majors are eligible. The two recipients receive substantial tuition assistance for two full years.
Rabbi Alice Stein and Marla Stein Memorial Scholarship
Jaime Solov, a May 1999 graduate of SUNY Ulster, along with her grandmother, Lila Reiter, have established a scholarship in memory of two special individuals whose lives ended as the result of a tragic accident. The recipient of the Rabbi Alice Stein and Marla Stein Memorial Scholarship will be chosen by Ms. Solov and Ms. Reiter. Full-time SUNY Ulster students who are either entering, returning or transferring with an eventual career goal in Human Services and who demonstrate financial need are eligible. Female students will receive first preference.

Muriel O. Ferraro taught in the Saugerties school system for forty eight years. The Muriel O. Ferraro Memorial Scholarship will be awarded to a student who is graduating and transferring to a four year college and plans to pursuing a career as an elementary education teacher.
Professor Ann LeFevre Gilchrist Scholarship
The Professor Ann LeFevre Gilchrist Scholarship has been established by Behavioral Sciences Professor Emerita, Ann Gilchrist. The recipients of this annual award must have a cumulative average of at least 3.0 and plan to transfer to a four-year institution to continue their education in the Liberal Arts.

Professor and Mrs. Lawrence Matson Earth Science Scholarship
Lawrence Matson, Professor of Earth Science and Geology, along with his wife, Sue, have established this scholarship. This award is given each year to students who have an interest in Earth Science. Students who have taken at least two Earth Science courses and have plans to pursue a career in Earth Science are given first preference. If no candidates fit these criteria, the award(s) will go to students who have taken Earth Science courses.
Betty Lou McCauley Memorial Scholarship
Betty Lou McCauley was a special member of SUNY Ulster's campus community who worked with children at SUNY Ulster's Children's Center. When Mrs. McCauley passed away, friends and family helped establish a memorial scholarship in her name. Ulster County residents who demonstrate financial need and are majoring in some aspect of childcare or early education are eligible for the Betty Lou McCauley Memorial Scholarship.

Professor Fredric Misner Mathematics Scholarship

Fredric Misner, an Ulster County Community College Professor Emeritus, has established a special scholarship to be awarded to a graduating and transferring SUNY Ulster student. The recipient must have an overall 3.0 cumulative average, with a 3.3 average attained in math courses. The recipient must have completed at least 12 credits of mathematics, and upon graduation, Calculus III (MAT 203). The recipient must plan to continue a mathematics education at a four-year university. |
Beatrice Moore Scholarship in Memory of Peter Joseph McGowan

Bea Moore established a scholarship in memory of her dear friend, Peter Joseph McGowan. Mr. McGowan served his community in many ways including as a Police Officer in New York City , an ordained priest in Caguas , Puerto Rico, a translator for the Ulster and Dutchess County court, and as Trustee and chairman of the Programs and Membership Committees for the Klyne Esopus Museum . The Klyne Esopus Museum offers a variety of exhibits about the culture, commerce and history of The Town of Esopus. The Beatrice Moore Scholarship in Memory of Peter Joseph McGowan will be awarded to an entering or returning student pursuing a career in history, including history education. The recipient should demonstrate a love of history and/or historic preservation and must have completed volunteer work.
Dr. Erna Moss Memorial Scholarship

Dr. Erna Renker Moss was a founding faculty member at Ulster County Community College, where she taught German and French for almost 20 years. At SUNY Ulster, and throughout her full and committed life, Dr. Moss left a legacy of accomplishment and a remarkable record of personal involvement with causes and people around the world. Her work as a psychotherapist and in the founding of the American Hospice Association of Ulster County are only two among many endeavors to which she devoted her energies before moving to New Zealand. This scholarship in her memory was created by her son, Dr. Craig Moss, and his family and will be awarded to a student who excels in foreign language study. Dr. Moss passed away on April 22, 2003 at her home in New Zealand. |

Helene Lehtinen, Professor Emerita of Communications, and members of her family originally established this scholarship in the names of her parents Marie and Guido J. Napoletano. Mr. Napoletano, a practicing attorney in Ulster County for over 50 years, served as president of the Ulster County Bar Association and was well respected for his integrity, scholarship, and love of the law. Mrs. Napoletano spent her early life as a milinary designer and later a devoted mother and grandmother, was also an active member of the community. This year their daughter Laurie (Lorraine Ann Napoletano) Skwarlo passed away suddenly and is now also being memorialized through the Napoletano Family Scholarship. Laurie’s unexpected demise is a great loss to her children, grandchildren, sister and close friends. The Marie and Guido J. Napoletano Family Memorial Scholarship is awarded to a SUNY Ulster graduate receiving an A.A. in Liberal Arts either in the Humanities, Social Sciences, or Math/Science. The recipient shall have attained a GPA of 3.7 or better and shall have no more than nine transfer credits. Completion of the Honors Program is desired but not required. |

Professor Barbara Sartorius Scholarship
Upon her retirement in 2003, Professor Emerita Barbara Sartourius established an annual scholarship for a returning student who is pursuing a course of study and/or planning a career in the field of education. The scholarship recipient may be enrolled either as a part-time or a full-time student and must have successfully completed two or more developmental courses with a grade of C or above.
Sarah M. Schmidt Memorial Scholarship
Sarah M. Schmidt was born in 1981 and lived for only two years. Sarah's parents, Denise and Michael, and her brother Alex, have established an endowed scholarship in her name. During Sarah's life, her family witnessed the love, patience and dedication of her special education teachers, and came to realize what an exceptional person is required to fill those shoes. The Sarah M. Schmidt Memorial Scholarship is available so that future generations of children, who are born with difficult obstacles to overcome, will benefit from a special person in their lives. Transferring second year SUNY Ulster students who demonstrate financial need and have a cumulative average of at least 3.30, and are Elementary Education Majors with an emphasis on Special Education are eligible.
Theresa Sena Memorial Scholarship
Robert Sena, Emeritus Professor of Biology, has established an annual scholarship in memory of his mother, Theresa Sena. Professor Sena's intent is to assist a student pursuing a course of study in early childhood education. He hopes to reflect his mother's love of children. A grade point average of 2.8 is preferred and the recipient must be a returning or transferring full-time student.
Professor Benjamin P. Stormer Memorial Scholarship
The Professor Benjamin P. Stormer Memorial Scholarship honors the memory of an SUNY Ulster Chemistry Professor known universally as a fine friend, teacher and scholar. Graduating and transferring SUNY Ulster students enrolled in the Chemistry Program are eligible.
Tomorrow's Teachers Scholarship
The Tomorrow's Teachers Scholarship was established in 2002 by a student organization at Ulster County Community College. This scholarship will be awarded to an Ulster County resident and graduate of an Ulster County high school and who plans to pursue a career as an elementary or secondary school teacher. Applicants must submit a letter indicating an interest in education, a letter of recommendation from a teacher or employer, and a high school transcript to the Tomorrow's Teachers Scholarship Committee. Ulster County Retired Teachers Association Scholarship
These six annual scholarships are sponsored by the Ulster County Retired Teachers Association. The members of the association choose the recipients. Recipients must be residents of Ulster County. These scholarships are awarded to students who are graduating and transferring and majoring in education. A special application is required.

Professor Clay Crisp Memorial Scholarship
The Professor Clay Crisp Memorial Scholarship was established in the memory of Professor Matthew C. Crisp, Jr. Although he retired in 1989, Professor Crisp continued to be an active teacher as an adjunct instructor at SUNY Ulster. At the time of Crisp's death, Richard Olsen, then chairman of SUNY Ulster's Music Department, sought contributions to create a suitable memorial that would represent Clay's sincere devotion to his students and his high musical standards. Candidates for this award should be enrolled at SUNY Ulster as entering freshman or returning students, with a concentration in music courses. The candidate should be interested in entering a music career and should be actively involved in instrumental music.
Lee Herrington Memorial Scholarship
The Lee Herrington Memorial Scholarship is funded by the annual scholarship concert presented by the Ulster County Community College Community Band, and invited local ensembles in the John C. Quimby Theater. One scholarship is awarded to a student who is in enrolled or has participated in SUNY Ulster’s wind bands. A second scholarship is awarded to a student who is enrolled or participating in one of SUNY Ulster’s coral groups. The scholarship recipients must be enrolled in the AAS Music degree program, Ulster county residents, entering or returning students enrolled for at least 6 credits with a minimum 3.0 grade point average. The College community would like to honor Professor Park, a founding faculty member of the college, for over twenty-five years of dedicated service. The scholarship is offered to a student who is pursuing a course of studies in Humanities and who is planning a career in a music-related field. Gary and Janaki Patrik Music Scholarship
Mr. & Mrs. Patrik established this endowed scholarship to encourage students in the music program at SUNY Ulster. The scholarship provides tuition assistance to full or part-time students enrolled in the program. Mr. Patrik is a trumpet player who participates in SUNY Ulster’s concert band, jazz band, and wind ensemble.
In addition to scholarship support, Mr. & Mrs. Patrik have generously made provisions for other initiatives that are essential to the music department and its students.

Bert Breitenberger touched many lives as a father, husband, teacher, and friend. Dr. Joel M. Ginsberg Memorial Scholarship
With the support of friends, family and the medical community, a scholarship was established to honor Dr. Ginsberg's achievements. Dr. Ginsberg served as a mentor and leader in the medical community devoting his time to emergency medicine and improving pre-hospital care. Dr. Ginsberg was the driving force behind the development of Ulster County Community College's paramedic program serving as medical director from program inception. This award will be granted to an incoming student enrolled in the paramedic program. Selection will be made by the faculty of the paramedic program, based upon a written essay that best reflects Dr. Ginsberg's philosophy of pre-hospital care.
Bessie G. Johnston Nursing Scholarship
The Bessie G. Johnston Nursing Scholarship was established to provide financial support to returning students enrolled in the Nursing Program at Ulster County Community College. Four scholarships are awarded each year.
Kentucky Fried Chicken Scholarship
This scholarship is made possible through the generosity of Darlene Pfeiffer, chief executive officer and the holder of two Kentucky Fried Chicken Franchises located in Kingston and Poughkeepsie. In addition to her work on behalf of the Association of KFC Franchises, of which she is past president, Ms. Pfeiffer has devoted her time and energy to sustaining and expanding the philanthropic legacy of Colonel Harland Sanders, founder of the KFC company. She currently serves on the board of directors of the Colonel’s Kids, which provides college scholarships. It is in the spirit of these awards that she has established five scholarships for students entering SUNY Ulster. Recipients must demonstrate self motivation, an entrepreneurial spirit, and be single parents. They must also demonstrate financial need. Preference may be given to students majoring in business, nursing or other health – related fields. Recipients who meet academic criteria may be eligible to receive the scholarship for a second year.
Kingston Hospital Auxiliary Scholarship
This scholarship is sponsored annually by the Kingston Hospital Auxiliary. The scholarship is awarded to an Ulster County Community College student enrolled in a health related program.

She also instructed in the College's Nursing Program after 30 years of progressive nursing positions in the USAFNC, VA Hospital and for the College of Physicians and Surgeons. Mrs. Macauley believes education is key to a life of personal and professional fulfillment. Candidates for this scholarship should be returning students, over the age of 19, with a cumulative average of 3.3. |
Barbara P. and Edward V. Marrott Scholarship
Ann Marrott, SUNY Ulster's Dean of Community Relations and Enrollment Management, was a scholarship recipient in 1981. Knowing firsthand the differences awards can make for students, Ann established a scholarship in the name of her parents. In May of 1999, the first Marrott Scholarship was awarded. Ann's mother, Barbara, passed away in August of 1999, and in lieu of flowers, family and friends made donations to the Marrott fund, enabling the fund to grow. Ulster County Community College students enrolled in a Health Care or Engineering Program are eligible for this award.

Barbara Maxwell Memorial Scholarship
The Barbara A. Maxwell Memorial scholarship was established in loving memory of a gifted teacher, supportive mentor, and beloved Aunt. Barbara A. Maxwell was a Professor of Nursing at SUNY Ulster, and she dedicated her life to educating tomorrows nurses, with emphasis on medical knowledge, clinical skills and compassionate patient care. With those ideals in mind this memorial scholarship was created. The scholarship will be awarded to a returning full-time nursing student who demonstrated strong clinical skills and compassionate treatment of patients, with at least a 3.0 GPA, along with a letter of recommendation from a SUNY Ulster Nursing faculty instructor. The recipient will be selected from the Ulster Community College Foundation, Inc. applicant pool by, the benefactors.
Professor Barbara Maxwell Memorial Nursing Scholarship
It is with much love and great pride that the family of Barbara Maxwell has established this scholarship in her memory. Barbara passed away on May 11, 2010 of ovarian cancer. She fought a courageous seven week battle against this deadly disease, never once losing her positive attitude while remaining supportive and inspirational to both her family and the hospital staff she came in contact with at her bedside. Barbara was a graduate of SUNY Ulster. She earned her Bachelor and Master Degrees in Nursing from SUNY New Paltz as well as a Master’s Degree in Health Administration from Russell Sage College. Her desire was to educate others in the profession she loved so dearly and to instill in all of her students the true meaning of Nursing: kindness, compassion, integrity, knowledge and the desire to provide the best nursing care to patients. She touched numerous lives during her 31 years as a nurse in the community, including her 26 years teaching at SUNY Ulster. She will long be remembered for her contagious smile, total compassion and kindness, extensive knowledge and the ability to find the time to help anyone in need. Her legacy will live on in the students she taught and the patients she nursed. This scholarship is being offered to a returning Nursing student at SUNY Ulster who demonstrates the qualifications of an exceptional nurse. The qualities so important to Prof. Maxwell were compassion, integrity and professionalism, coupled with a strong academic standing; a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher.
The Nursing Department Excellence Award in Memory of Barbara Maxwell
Barbara Maxwell was an outstanding Nursing faculty member who lost her courageous battle with cancer in 2010. This award is given to honor her memory and recognize her dedication to the SUNY Ulster Nursing Department and its high standards. The award will be given to a graduating Nursing student who exhibits the characteristics that Professor Maxwell most instilled in her students: kindness, compassion, high standards, strong ethics and clinical excellence. This award will be decided by the faculty and staff of the Nursing Department and will be awarded at the Nursing Department Candlelight Ceremony.
Kristopher M. Moore Commemorative Award
The Kristopher M. Moore Commemorative Award was established by an Ulster County Community College Nursing faculty member, in memory of her nephew. Kristopher was born with a congenital heart defect and lived for only three days. During Kristopher's stay in the hospital, his parents and family experienced first hand the compassion and caring of the nursing staff and came to appreciate how extraordinary nursing care and human kindness can make all the difference to patients and their families. The Kristopher M. Moore Commemorative Scholarship is available to nursing students who wish to pursue a career in the field of cardiac or pediatric nursing. Recipients must be academically strong and have demonstrated integrity and the ability to be a compassionate and caring nurse. This award is recognized at the Nursing Candlelight Ceremony.
Dr. Jacob Moss Memorial Nursing Scholarship
The Dr. Jacob R. Moss Memorial Nursing Scholarship was established in 1974 by founding faculty member, Dr. Erna Moss and her daughter, Joyce. Returning or graduating and transferring SUNY Ulster students enrolled in the Nursing Program are eligible for this award. The scholarship funds are to be used primarily for tuition but if the need arises may be used for school-related necessities such as; books, supplies, childcare, and transportation.
SUNY Ulster Nursing Program Graduates Scholarship
The 2008 graduating class of Nursing students established a scholarship to recognize their peers. The award is given to returning nursing students who have demonstrated caring and compassion and have financial need.
Diane O'Brien Cooke Memorial Scholarship

Diane O'Brien Cooke, an Ulster County Community College Alumna, was a committed medical professional, who later became a Nursing Professor at SUNY Ulster. Diane Cooke's career began as one of the first nurses in the Coronary Care Unit at Benedictine Hospital. She served as a member of the nursing faculty at Russell Sage College in Troy, and she also held supervisory positions in the emergency and critical care departments at Albany Medical Center. In March of 1996, Mrs. Cooke died after a brief illness. Friends, family, and colleagues were fundamental in the establishment of a memorial scholarship in her name. The Diane O'Brien Cooke Memorial Scholarship is available to returning Nursing students at SUNY Ulster, with a cumulative average of at least 3.3. Ulster County residents are preferred recipients. Many gifts to this fund were made in memory of Diane's sister, Eileen O'Brien Showers, who passed away in 1999. |
Dorothy E. Patton Memorial Nursing Scholarship

Dorothy Edwards Patton, age 97, died on November 2, 2010, at the Mt. View Nursing Home in New Paltz, New York. She was raised and lived most of her life in Nashville, Tennessee. In 1932, she married William Louis Patton, who worked as a plant manager at AT&T. Dorothy received a bachelor’s degree in chemistry and a master’s degree in special education from Peabody Teachers' College. She taught a variety of classes at the elementary and secondary levels throughout her life. She was a dedicated teacher and an educational innovator in her time. Perhaps her greatest achievement was developing some of the first learning disabilities programs in Tennessee. Later in her career, she shared her educational expertise with college students at the graduate level. She possessed the ability, passion, and compassion to make a difference in the lives of hundreds if not thousands of students, colleagues and friends. |

Preference will be given to a student who has worked at the Mountain View Nursing Home in New Paltz, is a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN), a Certified Nurse Assistant (CNA), or is a single parent. Elaine Einterz Reiss Award
With a career in the field of nursing both at Kingston Hospital and the Ulster County Health Department, Elaine Reiss has established an annual award to recognize graduating Nursing students. The award is given to students from the Ulster County Community College Nursing Program, of which she is an alumna. Recipients will be selected who have worked to pay for their education and will enter the workforce following graduation. Preference is given to single parents. Judith Robins Memorial Scholarship
After graduation from Bellevue School of Nursing in New York City, Judith Robins worked as Supervisor of Psychiatric Nursing at Bellevue Hospital and later helped to develop the Psychiatric Unit at Benedictine Hospital. After receiving a Bachelors Degree in Science from St. Joseph's College in Maine, Robins went on to become Assistant Vice President of Materials Management at Benedictine. Later, Robins joined Olsten's Health Services (at the time called Upjohn), helping to develop a strong program of home health care. The scholarship is available to returning or graduating and transferring SUNY Ulster Nursing students who are interested in Pediatric or Psychiatric Nursing. It is preferred that the recipient be an Ulster County high school graduate.
Helen M. Roedell Memorial Scholarship
The Helen M. Roedell Memorial Scholarship, established in 1999 by the Roedell family, is in memory of a woman who confronted her illness of Lymphoma with determination and courage. Mrs. Roedell was a committed member of the medical community who worked at Benedictine Hospital as a Health Nurse, until illness forced her retirement. Helen Roedell was an inspiration to many who were confronting their own battles with cancer. "Helen will be remembered as a quiet, refined woman who touched so many with her kind and thoughtful ways." Recipients of the Helen M. Roedell Memorial Scholarship will be returning SUNY Ulster County Community College Nursing Majors who are enrolled full-time. Recipients must demonstrate financial need.

Established in 2004, this scholarship is awarded to full-time students pursuing a career in business and a second student enrolled in the SUNY Ulster nursing program.

The Aaron E. and Jane M. Shultis Memorial Scholarship Fund was established through a bequest with the intention of assisting returning or graduating and transferring Ulster County Community College students who are majoring in Engineering, or a health-related field.

The Joseph and Rita Sinagra Memorial Nursing Scholarship was established by their son, Phil Sinagra, as a special way to commemorate his parents. Ulster County Community College nursing students who are pursuing a career in the care of the aged will be considered for this award.

Staff Sergeant Steiger died in active duty in Vietnam in 1966, and it was his wish that a part of his GI insurance go to his niece, who used the money to help fund her nursing education. It is with gratitude and love that we honor Sergeant Steiger's memory. This award will be given to a returning or graduating nursing student who demonstrates compassion, kindness, and a hard-working spirit. Elizabeth “Betty” Tucker Memorial Scholarship
Elizabeth H. Tucker graduated from Ulster County Community College with an Associate Degree in Nursing in 1970. After raising a family, Dr. Tucker began her college education. After her graduation from SUNY Ulster, she received a BSN from Pace University and completed her masters and doctoral degrees in education from Columbia University 's Teacher's College. Dr. Tucker worked as a nurse at Kingston Hospital and as the Staff Development Coordinator at Ferncliff Nursing Home in Rhinebeck. In 2000, she retired as Director of the Nursing Cohert Program for Master and Doctoral Students at Columbia University . Dr. Tucker was inducted into the SUNY Ulster Alumni Hall of Fame and was the 1993 commencement speaker. As a gifted mentor, her commitment to her students was a hallmark of her career. Following her passing in April 2008, Dr. Tucker's friends and family established a scholarship in her memory that is being awarded to a SUNY Ulster student in the Nursing program.
Ulster County School Nurses Association Scholarship
The Ulster County School Nurses Association scholarship, sponsored annually by the association, is intended for returning SUNY Ulster students enrolled in the Nursing Program. The candidate must have a cumulative average of at least 2.5 and demonstrate financial need. It is preferred that the recipient be an Ulster County resident.
Matthew A. Wolff Memorial Scholarship
Relatives and friends of Matthew have established an endowed scholarship in his memory. Matthew was an eighteen year old who was tragically killed in an automobile accident last summer. He attended SUNY Ulster as a computer science major and worked at Kingston Hospital, planning a career in radiology. Therefore, the scholarship will be dedicated to the pursuit of a course of study in a health-related field. The applicant may be an entering, returning or transferring student, enrolled on either a full or part-time basis. Demonstration of financial need will be a consideration.
Zonta Club of Kingston Scholarship
The Zonta Club of Kingston sponsors an annual scholarship for Ulster County Community College students who are enrolled in the Nursing Program. The scholarship is in recognition of one of Zonta International's founding members, Amelia Earhart. Preference is given to candidates who have involved themselves in community service and are residents of Ulster County.
Professor and Mrs. Harry Matzen History and Medical Scholarship

In recognition of his many contributions to Ulster County Community College and to the Foundation, President Robert Brown established scholarship awards in the name of Professor Emeritus Harry Matzen and his wife, Carolyn Matzen, former Director of the Kingston Library. The Professor and Mrs. Harry Matzen History Scholarship is awarded to a graduating and transferring Ulster student majoring in History. The Professor and Mrs. Harry Matzen Medical Scholarship is awarded to a graduating and transferring SUNY Ulster student majoring in Nursing or Pre-Med. |
Alfred and Bella Rehm Memorial Scholarship
Emeritus Professor of Biology and currently a member of the Adjunct Faculty at SUNY Ulster, Robert Sena has provided an annual scholarship award to honor the memory of his aunt and uncle. Mr. and Mrs. Rehm shared a love for the study of History, and in particular, held a special interest in European, American Military, and Ancient History. The award will be given to a student pursuing these studies with the expectation of teaching and/or researching as a career track. A 3.3 cumulative grade point average is a preferred qualification for a full-time, returning or transferring student. Financial need is a factor in determining this award.

Joseph P. Budik Memorial Scholarship

With the sudden loss of Joe Budik, his family, friends and his many colleagues at the college have established a scholarship in his memory. Joe was a beloved member of the SUNY Ulster campus community and held the position of Director of Maintenance and Plant Operations. Joe will also be remembered as a long-term President of the Organization of Professional and Administrative Personnel (OPAP) at SUNY Ulster and for his dedication to the college and students. The recipient of the award will be a student enrolled in the Veterinary Technician Program. |
Symons Foundation, Inc. Scholarship
The Symons Foundation, Inc. funds an annual award equal to full tuition and fees for one entering or returning student at Ulster County Community College. Mr. Scott Symons' intent in establishing this scholarship is to assist a student who demonstrates a strong affiliation with animal welfare, either by course of study, career goal, or with a spirit of volunteerism. In addition to sharing the same concern for the well-being of animals, other criteria include full-time status for dedicated students who are attending consecutive semesters to complete their education in a timely fashion. Financial need and a minimum 3.0 grade point average are also considerations. Mr. Symons will make the final determination of the recipient of the award.
VISUAL & PERFORMING ARTS
Jack and Marti Lawson Memorial Scholarship
The Lawson Family has established a scholarship in memory of Marti and Jack, beloved members of SUNY Ulster's campus community for many years. The scholarship has received significant support from the Faculty Association, staff members and family friends. The scholarship is in honor of their dedication to the Theater Department, students and colleagues alike. The Lawson legacy of artistry lives on within the students whose lives they have touched. An award will be given annually to a student who pursues a course of study in the Fine/Performing Arts, with preference given to theater students. The Lawson Family, in consultation with the Chair of Visual & Performing Arts & Communications, will select a recipient who meets the criteria above and who maintains a minimum grade point average of 3.0.
Muroff-Kotler Scholarship
The Muroff-Kotler Scholarship is a special fund to be awarded to a returning or transferring SUNY Ulster student who is enrolled in the Visual Arts Program. The recipient of this award will be chosen by the Program Coordinator of Visual Arts.
